Question Blown HeadGasket?

Yeah, i was driving last night, and i heard a very loud noise out of no where, and ever since after that, the engine has no compression, i mean i press the accelerator, and the car goes, just really slow. To top that off, the car is louder than a Harley Davidson...i really think i blew a head gasket. Anyone else think so, or think something different? By the way, i drive a 90 LT v6, auto w/ 127700 miles on it

Re: Blown HeadGasket?

What color is the oil, milky or normal clear to dark color? Any anti freeze leaking? Noise is not a normal thing with a head gasket. Only way to check compression is a tester. I recall you mentioned "brown" anti freeze before, but never heard back on this. Did you get a flush, is anti freeze green, brown or what? My dad's 89 Olds just blew a head gasket, and also cracked the head for good measure. It ran but blew steam like an old tea kettle, and oil turned milky color since now anti freeze is in there. Advise and get back to us.

well, if you lost compression, you car wouldnt run, and a bad headgasket doesnt make your car sound like a harly.

it sounds like your muffler fell off, and you have no backpressure, which is cause for the bad acceleration.

Re: Blown HeadGasket?

Yeah, maybe that’s what happened, but I don’t think my muffler fell of, just some thing with the back pressure. The coolant is fine, it’s a wonderful green, the reason it was showing up like pudding was because of the little that I was using. I checked the oil, it seems fine. Car is really loud, when the hood is open and the engine is running, it made car alarms go off. Ima check my muffler now as a matter of fact, but I really don’t think it fell of. Is there anyway that I can post a video on here to show yall?

hey, sorry about not responding, that was acually my dad who talked to you

but anyways, it sounds like you may have gotten a hole in your exhaust somewhere. where is it the loudest? by the engine, or at the rear of the car?

Have you ever replaced anything having to do with your exhaust? Your car is what, 16 years old now, and with the stock stuff, it could possibly be bad.

Re: Blown HeadGasket?

I replaced stuff, but nothing to do with the exhaust, It is mostly loud from the back side of the engine, were the firewall is.

I think the exhaust has been replaced before. Twice in six years. Because when my dad got the car six years ago, he got a new one put on. And the one that’s on there right now looks nothing like the old one that was on it after he replaced it the first time. So I think he replaced it.

There was a loud bang, as soon as I pushed the accelerator going up a not so steep hill, I heard it. Also, the car smelled like fuel after the bang.

Re: Blown HeadGasket?

I will lay odds that the car backfired for some reason and the catalytic converter blew off, or apart. May be exhaust header but I bet it's the converter. They can get clogged also over time. your muffler is at the end of the car, the converter is near the front. Maybe it just blew loose and can be put back on.

Okay, I got some videos up, the first on show my exhaust, and it looks like it works fine, and the second is my motor.

In the second one, I moved the camera to were the sound is coming from, and you can hear some wind blowing past the camera. The wind is coming from that area of the engine bay.

Hope this help's to diagnose.

Re: Blown HeadGasket?

All I get is audio, no video with either Explorer or Firefox. Maybe my computer is missing a file or something. It sounds like an exhaust leak, a bad one. Let me look in my book and see if perhaps there is a tube perhaps that may be connected to exhaust or something like that. I have seen that happen before.

Re: Blown HeadGasket?

Just a guess but make sure all your spark plugs are in.

Re: Blown HeadGasket?

Yeah, it was a spark plug. Some how, it shot out of the head while I was driving. I think what happened was that the head's threading was crossed a few times, and over time the threading just gave out. I applied some liquid threading to the plug, and screwed in what was left of the threading. I'm waiting for it to dry, then hopefully I might be able to drive it for a little while.

I might trade it for a 240sx...

Re: Blown HeadGasket?

Glad I was able to help. I hope you are able to fix the stripped threads. Maybe a heli coil might do the trick.

How do you install a helicoil?

Re: Blown HeadGasket?

The only problem with a helicoil for a sparkplug is that you would have to remove the head because the helicoil comes in a kit witch requires you to tap the hole and because of the metal chips created by tapping the hole to insert the helicoil you would want to remove the head.
