After Nissan of America released the Xterra nearly 2 years ago, Japan has been begging for one. Even though they had the Terrano 2 (a "small" Pathfinder"), they wanted another. But there was one problem. The Xterra was too trucklike. Thats right. They wanted to shift the focus. But when Nissan debuted this aggressive SUV, the crowd was in awe. I have heard that its basically and Xterra, lowered 3/4", and with a new body. Oh well, suits me fine.

What is the world coming to? Perhaps auto-makers are running out of fresh ideas for SUVs. Nissan is not the only one with a "sport-cute-ility vehicle" with a sports car engine... Toyota has the new Matrix in the works, (a mini-van? mini-ute? sport-wagon?) which will be available with the engine/tranny from MY car, the 2ZZGE + 6-speed gearbox, which powers the Celica GT-S. BOO to Toyota for making 97 new SUVs all at once, when it seemed like sports cars were finally making a comeback... especially with fuel costs burning a hole through SUV/gas guzzler owner's wallets. Let's all hope Nissan doesn't do the same. What is the point of having an SUV (or relative) powered by a sports car motor? Better buy some roll cages; theres going to be a LOT of "rolling" going on...

The engine is a good one.. need it in a light car.
I have seen a SR20VE in a Pulsar. He then turbo'd it and it is putting out 350hp in a 1100kg car.. The SR16VE N1 puts out 196HP.. 1600cc..!

Donno bout the Xtrail, not a big fan of SUV or SUV type cars. However put the SR20VVT in an S15 chassis and I'll step over my own mother to get one.

I like this truck, speacially the AUTO-4WD mode, one of the things i dislike is the low weight it got, but it's smooth and soft to drive... indeed my mom got one of this here is the picture:

Re: Does anyone else like this SUV?
True, they look good and are a decent sort of road car, but off road they are no good. towed about a half dozen in a week on the beach.

Never tried the Xterra although we own two Pathfinders: 95 & 92. I,m an Aussie living in a very cold part of Canada & a jap bike rider first & formost. The way I see it is the Pathfinder is the almost perfect vehicle for where we live. I am not a big fan of giant V8 American vehicles & the Pathfinder provides economical fual usage, reliability, good strength for a mid-sized 4WD & reasonably good manners over varied conditions. They both tow motor bikes thru quarries, etc and generally around all summer & provide a little more traction(safety) in our cold winters, cart the family & dogs from one spot in the country to another without a fart, & can generally be relied upon. Biggest downfall(in my eyes) is the few niggling elect probs, ie: light stalk & temp/fuel gauge probs & the inability to slide a 4'x8' sheet thru the back window. I will buy an xterra if it handle like my wifes 95 & I can fit a 4x8 sheet of whatever up its tailgate.
