3.1 v6 1992 tcc problem
Hello
I have just bought a trans sport 3,1 1992 mod(3 speed). I have a problem with the tcc solenoid. It stucks when the car is droven for about 40 min. and the engine stalls when I stop the car. I live in the North of Norway so the Pontiac is a rare car here and the workshops has little experience with American cars. (they just want to overhaul the transmission). I`m sure that it is the tcc and I will try to change it. I have a repair manual for this car but it dosen`t even mention the tcc, and no pictures of the inside of the transmission. Is it possible to replace this part whitout taking the transmission out of the car? Have anybody some figures that show where it is placed an how to to this. best regards jonnern |

Re: 3.1 v6 1992 tcc problem
I have the same problem with my Transport SE. I just removed the electrical plug from the side of the transmission and alls well. Car just revs a little higher ( 500 revs) at 100 kpm. As the speed limit in Norway is low and the police are strict it should not be a problem.
If you want to repair the TCC then the solenoid is inexpensive and it is possible to do the job with engine in place. It will take all day and you have to strip the front drivers side wheel/disc/bodywork to get at the transmission case , but it can be done. The hard part is connecting the electrical connections. There is a section on the web explaining the whole sequence, just can't remember where.

Re: 3.1 v6 1992 tcc problem
TCC is a part of the torque converter. SO....no way to fix it without removing the transmission....
Indeed you can simply remove the electrical command to the TCC then it will not stick once engaged....and in fact this is a simple way to decide if it is in fact the culprit. If all trouble disappear once unplugged, there is a relation. BUt...if the trouble stays...time to look at something else. NOw..what the book says in 3T40 automatic transaxle diagnosis: CONDITION: engine stalls during reverse or drive engagement INSPECT: Auxiliary VAlve Body FOR CAUSE: Missing or clogged TCC auxiliary valve body filter. I'd add to this: sticky TCC control valve. THe TCC by itself CANNOT stay applied: pressure has to be applied and it comes through the TCC control valve, that is a part of the auxiliary valve body. THis is inside the transmission cover facing the driver side wheel well...but I would not venture into describing what kind of access is available from there..Oops..I see KingArthur just solved that. www.avigex.ca/xport/3T40diagramm.jpg www.avigex.ca/xport/3T40controlvalve.jpg www.avigex.ca/xport/3T40auxvalve.jpg
