coolant drains from engine block

I have a 87 Mazda B2200 that doesn't get much use. It does the standard blue smoke and ticking when started up, until it warms up (I'd take it to the shop, but I use it on 2 mile round trips to the dump about once a month in the summer). I had to get my emissions test, so I figured I'd drive it to work (17 miles) to clean out the system before the test. Unfortunately, after I'd gone about 15 miles, the coolant started leaking out from the engine block.

Once I was stopped I was able to run water into the radiator, and after it reached a certain level, I presume the water pump kicked in because then the water would gush out from the engine block under the air filter on the passenger side. I was unable to see exactly where it was coming from, but it did not appear to be a broken hose or anything. Someone told me it was probably a freeze plug, but I don't know enough about engines to make that determination. I'm going to take it down to the shop to get an estimate, but I was wanting to have an idea of what the problem might be before I talk with the mechanic. And yes, I'll have him look at my valves while I'm there

Any info is appreciated!
