gas gauge failure

Im new here and would appreciated your help on how to fix my wifes 99 LT Suburban. Whenever I get into the truck I pray that I dont run out of gas b/c the gauge ping pongs all over the place. My wife tells me your okay to drive until it starts bouncing back and forth that means your getting near empty. The gauge normally reads about 8/10 all the time. My question what steps can I take to diagnose the problem then fix it?

The most common problem is the wiring connector at the fuel pump. Find it and check for corrosion or anything abnormal. Beyond that is the sender itself which is part of, and as far as I know not replacable, the fuel pump assy. You could also have some chaffed wiring between the tank and guage. Hope this helps..........Steve
