Car stalling

When I start my car in the morning, it starts fine. When I put it in drive or reverse after starting, it kills. I have to let the car just run for about 20 minutes. After it runs for awaile, it drives fine.
The cars seems to do this everythime it has been sitting up for about two hours. I always have to let warm up for about 15 to 20 minutes.
I have changed the spark plugs and wires, and the Idle Air Cintrol Valve (IAC), and the problem still happens.
Took the car to the parts store to run the code check and the following codes showed up with a problem P0340, 1742, 0443.
Any suggestions

Re: Car stalling

Welcome to the forum.

What year and engine does your Taurus have? There are issues that are more common to certain model years and engines, and knowing that information will help narrow the suggestions.

I don't have the code list in front of me right now, so I'm not sure what those codes mean.

However, from your symptoms, I would suspect you have an issue with vacuum somewhere or, if you have the Duratec 24V engine, you may have vacuum secondaries (depends on the year) that are stuck open. Stuck secondaries can cause symptoms identical to what you describe.

You could also have an out of range coolant temperature sensor, a stuck Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve, or possibly the common DPFE sensor failure (related to the EGR valve).

Re: Car stalling

looked up codes,, p0343 has to do with the camshaft position sensor, seems to be common problem on here
p0443 is some type of evap purge valve issue
For the p1742 code, my book says to consult the transmission section of the powertrain manual for diagnosis of issue, which might be your stalling in reverse or drive ranges

Re: Car stalling

some additional info, I looked up 1742 in the trans section, says it has to do with torque converter lockup issues which would explain your car stalling immediately, solenoid may be stuck "on"..
