Transmission?

My 92 Park Ave. 3.8L with only 40,200 miles has a weird whinning noise that fluctuates with speed. I took it to a dealer and was told that I need a new transmission. Is spending $1,995 for a new trans. worth it for my car? Or should I get one at a junk yard, or just a new car? There is no slipping, just a very slight shudder only if I floor it. Everything else on the car is in perfect condition. It looks brand new. What should I do?

Re: Transmission?

First, I'd get a second opinion.

Second, I'd price out what you would buy as a replacement.

Do you like the car? Does it meet your needs? Can you afford to buy another car?

IF your answer to the first two questions are "yes" the cost of having the transmission rebuilt may be worth it. A new car comperable to what you have will run $30,000 easily. Even a late model Park Avenue will run you 15 to 20 grand. A new transmission is about 2 grand.

Re: Transmission?

I would take off the modulator and check the valve thats behind the modulator make sure its not stuck. This will cause high line pressure>> whine that fluctuates with engine RPM. If the car really has only 40K, the body is in mint condition and everything else is in good working order I would fix it. $1500-$1800 Vs. $10,000 or more for a differnent car with low miles. Definitely get a second opinion. 3.8L are a great engine early ones had issues with the timing chain breaking but its still an excellent engine.
