Angry 2000 New Beetle turbo starts, stalls

I have a problem with my gas turbo beetle. When trying to start it cold it starts and stalls, starts, stalls. Usually takes five or six times before it will catch and idle. Dealers say no codes, everything fine at this time. Take it home, same thing. The one thing I do notice is that when it starts correctly it seems to stay on fast idle (1100 rpm) for a time before slowing to 800 rpm or so. When the start/stall thing is happening it does not want fast idle. I have told dealer and they just shake heads. Any ideas would be helpful. I really think the problem might be tied to not fast idleing but am not sure. 20,000 miles on car, very good condition no other problems.
Thanks

I had the dealer replace that part you mentioned (maf sensor). Car is better but still starts-stalls once in a while. Seems to need to start-stall three to five times before it catches and runs. Any other ideas? Thank you in advance for any help.
