Upper oil pan leak - how hard?

My truck is leaking oil and a transmission shop that I was having change the rear main seal has stated that they believe its the upper oil pan seal and they don't do that work. I've read in a post here, which somebody stated that this is a 'big job', but I was wondering if anybody knew basically what needs to be done to get access to this part? I have the electronic vehicross manual at home, but don't have access to it right now. Does the manual cover this sufficiently for a diy'er? I've used it for a few other jobs, it was wasn't completly clear

As far as I know, there's no way to remove the lower block skirt (upper pan) with out removing the engine. The lower aluminum skirt is sealed (and bolted) to the aluminum block with orange RTV. I've never heard of one leaking?!? It really isn't under any pressure, nor does it 'hold' oil in that location. Oil would just run past the seal area. I'd clean the engine compartment well and watch that area.
