Question Question on Flowmaster Exhaust for a 1997 Cobra

I’m looking to get a throatier sound out of my 1997 Cobra. I’ve done nothing so far to upgrade the car except to put K&N filters on it. I’m looking at putting the “Flowmaster Force II Catback w/50 Series Delta Flow Muffler: 94-97 Mustang 5.0/4.6L (dual rear)” on it. Hard telling by the sound bites on the websites so I’m wondering if anyone has these on their car or knows someone who does? I want the throatier sound, but I don’t want to rock the neighbors. Will the 50 series do the trick for me? Will I notice the difference between that and the stock system?

Please advise….

Re: Question on Flowmaster Exhaust for a 1997 Cobra

Haven't heard the 50 series flows on a 4.6 personally. I have the Force II catback on my '94 Cobra with a mild 306 in it, and it is very mild sounding. Idle is noticable over stock mufflers, and part throttle is very very mild. WOT is where they open up, almost to the point of being as loud as a 40 series 'Flow.

Magnaflows sound very good with 4.6's also, and the dB level is very similar between them and a 50 series Flowmaster.

Re: Question on Flowmaster Exhaust for a 1997 Cobra

I put the Flowmaster 40 Series on my 96 GT. The sound was much improved over the stock mufflers, but still wasn't what I wanted. I noticed that the GT had 6 catalytic converters on it and looked into getting a catted H Pipe to replace that, but wound up just having a friend at a muffler shop cut out the front 4 cats and weld in some new pipe. I also put on a set of MIL eliminators to quell the MIL light in the dash. Now I have that deep throaty sound that I wanted. It isn't too bad for the neighbors at idle and part throttle, but gets their attention at WOT for sure!

Re: Question on Flowmaster Exhaust for a 1997 Cobra

where are you looking at purchasing this from? i didnt think all the exhaust hangers were identical from 94-97. keep www.jegs.com in mind theyre reasonably priced. i would recommend the 40 series flows because as mentioned before having 6 cats on the earlier years will quiet the car down significantly and the 50 series you might spend $$ and not really notice anything. now if you want a really nice rumble id say go for an off-road hpipe (no cats) MIL eliminators, and a flowmaster american thunder catback. i ran that on my 96 GT ill have to put up a sound clip of it for you.

also try www.mustangexhaust.com register in those forums you can hear sound bits for any exhaust combo out there.

Re: Question on Flowmaster Exhaust for a 1997 Cobra

Offroad H and 40 series flows is drony and sounds cool for the first week, then it's annoying IMHO. They were really designed for a motor with a little more meat than a 4.6 or a 5.0 (a single super 40 sounds okay on my 351W truck...

Exhaust hangars for the catback were identical from '94 to '97 and then changed in '98 IIRC. Quite a few minor things changed in '98 even though the outward appearance of the car is nearly identical to a '97.

If you want it to sound mild, go with a high-flow cat H or X and the quieter 'flows or Magnaflows.

I can't carry on a cell phone conversation in any of my buddies' cars with 40 series 'flows, but in mine at cruising speed with the 50's it is noticably louder than stock, but normal conversation is very doable. Like I said, they don't get loud until you punch it. Also, I have an O/R H pipe and a cam, my car is deceivingly quiet for the power it puts out.

Re: Question on Flowmaster Exhaust for a 1997 Cobra

i got a 1990 gt 302 with bbk headers and bbk off road X pipe with flow masters, not sure what type of flow masters i got tho, then the pipe goes right down off the flow masters, and o my god it sounds so frickin sweet, the motor has nothing but done to it, and it sounds like its just a crazy steat deamon.

Yes, the 40 Series Flows DO have a drone to them at a sustained road speed, and some people find it annoying. I really don't mind it, even on long road trips...again, it's different strokes for different folks! I like hearing the car even when I'm driving long distance. I'm a muscle car die hard I guess!

Thumbs up Re: Question on Flowmaster Exhaust for a 1997 Cobra

My 98 Gt has an offroad H pipe and super 40s. Interior noise is pretty loud but i love every second of it. I can make people a 100 yards away turn their heads. Actually made a little kid cry when I started it cuz he was too close lol.

If you love flowmasters then I would get the 40 series mufflers- with your cats it won't bust your eardrums, but will still grunt when you get on it. it will make a sound you could fall asleep to. calming if you ask me
