Did I have a souped up miata?

I had a 91 miata, my grandfather has a 90, both are 5sp. The 90 had an open diff, mine had a LSD. Mine sounded good his sounded like a lawn mower. His was in much better condition but it was way slower than mine. Is there any significant power differences between these two years?

you may have had the 1.8L version compared to the 1.6L motor commonly found in older mx5s.
yes there is a significant difference between the 2, not sure exactly when the 1.8L mx5 were introduced though

you both had the same engine.... but his crank pulley slipped, causing timing to be off
