bad oil leak

i checked my oil yesterday and it was 2 1/4 quarts low so i put 2 quarts in and by that time the next day it was already 1 1/2 quarts low again so i checked it out and it has a bad oil leak coming from under the plastic silver shield piece that covers the timing belts....i got it off and found that my small timing belt was demolished but my car still runs....can anyone tell me what that small belt does and what the top pully that that belt goes around does, cause from what i can tell all the oil is coming from behind that top pully with teeth on it.... can that thing lock up cause my small belt was completely demolished?

Re: bad oil leak

That small belt is the balance shaft belt. I don't know why it would cause an oil leak unless it damaged something else when it broke. Check you oild pump seal and some of the other things around there.

Re: bad oil leak

sorry forgot....92 talon tsi....all stock....the oil looks to be coming from either the top pully with teeth on the small belt or the one that just spins thats under that belt....do i have to put that belt back on or can i go without it and is there any seals behind those pully that could leak?

Which pulley is it leaking from? The balance shaft pulley? You don't need the balance shaft belt connected. If the seal on the balance shaft was damaged when the belt broke that could have caused the problem.

Re: bad oil leak

im not positive but i think its from the balance shaft pully that its leaking....its leaking bad though....its a solid stream...it pours off where the oil sending unit connects but its all coming from above it all, inside near the balance shaft area somewhere....would i just have to take the balance shaft pully off to put a new seal in it or is it more complicated than that?...i already have it stripped down to all the bare side of the motor...

Re: bad oil leak

I'm wondering how all this oil didn't end up on the ground somewhere and be easily noticed, 2 quarts is a fuckin lot to lose and not realize it until you check it.

Re: bad oil leak

Ok here's a link to a pic without balance shafts. http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/images/1g2g/1g2g01.jpg were exactly is it leaking from. The bigger bottom pulley is the crank pulley. I'm thinking part of the shaft got wedged between something and fucked up the seal.

Re: bad oil leak

i think that mines leaking from the upper pully i know that the belt was wedged around that pully pretty tight...i dont know why just that belt would break though...

Re: bad oil leak

have you had the timing belt replaced? That belt should have been replaced with the tbelt. I didn't replace mine when i did my tbelt the balance shaft belt broke 5 minutes after i started it. I bet the balance shaft pulley seal is broken, just do the balance shaft elimination.
