Pretty stupid question

I have no idea what the hell the bell housing is and what the hell it does. Can some of you guys help me out with this. Feel pretty dumb but I have never worked on one i think.

Bell housings never require any work, they're what there name implies, a housing. The housing attaches the transmission (manual only) to the engine.
The clutch assembly sits between the tranny and engine, and is covered by the housing.

Automatic transmissions have the bell housing as part of the tranny case.
