Do those ebay power chips work?

I was just looking through some stuff for my 00 SE and I keep seeing these really cheap chips that claim to add up to 20hp. All it looks like you do is just put a resistor inside one of the sensors close to the MAF and master cylinder.

Has anyone ever done this and could it possibly work? I want to chip my car, but if this works then I mine as well do this instead of paying a lot to have a garage do it.

Thanks,

DF

That R cheats ECU/MAF input to boost injection. Some MAF electronics links on my homepage 9...

(edit: typos correction. This site was down ½ day, so I had no access...)

So this actually works and you'd recommend it?

No.

On multi level q, so there is no single answer. Also the physical variables are so plentiful, so in some case the answer could be yes ['magic box' price is robbery]. And do notice that I have no hands on experience...

Stock cars engines have 'as lean as possible' gas mixture with air, one reason is to keep mpg up. To produce max pwr, this mixture must be richer. With certain set of variables, [huh] hoaxing ECU to inject more, will increase pwr (on some spot on the rpm curve) and increase gas consumption. With another set of variables, increasing injection, the only 'danger' is blk smoke. So a claim that this resistor would be snake oil cure for all, is not true.

All power from cylinder comes from explodin gas mixing with ideal air volume.

This issue is so big, that it doesnt fit on this thread... Professional approach would be the special ECU, wich allows all kinds of adjustments and programming.

The fastest way to increase power [in 'any' stock car] is to increase engine airflow into cylinders = mod the intake. My guess is that generally stock injectors with stock ECU will supply enough gas to 25-50% pwr increase - if the air volume is there. On my maxima this increase is at least 25% requiring some work but not money[I will not provide proof:] ...My guess is that there is possibility to more, but risks to blow tranny etc will increase, so I am not pursuing this route; more important is to 'get there'.

don't use them man, they're junk. if you want to get your ecu done properly have it sent to some place like Jim Wolfe technologies. they'll advance your timing, raise your rev limiter to 7200 rpm and adjust things like air:fuel ratio to get an actual increase in power/performance.

Re: Do those ebay power chips work?

Here's what these chips or eproms do in most cases.

They really don't raise your h.p. but alter the peak of the power curve in most cases.

I.E. You will feel more get-up off the line and think it's got more h.p. when all the chip has done is robbed you of some top-end umph! for some bottom-end umph!.

The chip may advance your time at the beginning of accelleration a bit more than the original factory timing, but most of your power increase is a perceived feeling from the changes in the engines response.

I had a 93 Porsche and bought a Weltmeister chip for it, and did feel a difference when starting out in 1st gear from a stand-still(manual tranny). The clutch engagement felt better, because I believe the timing/advance was slightly altered to give me a little smoother off line accelleration. As far as top-end performance, I couldn't discern a difference.
.........
Becareful that chipping doesn't alter your smog emissions to the extent that you might not pass, although in most cases these chips shouldn't be too much to worry about.
........
Here's where chips really make a difference........
With turbo-charged cars........they do affect boost pressures and fuel mixtures and can make some big h.p. increases. Many folks in my old Porsche club had chipped there 944 turbo cars, and really turned them into screamers.
..........
That's my two cents.

No chip sets exist on Maxima stock ECU's. If smbdy has exact info with links, pics, versions etc. -Then- drop the info here, pls.

5c Resistor or 15c potentiometer is not a chip; the mentioned e-bay box boosts MAF signal.

Re: Do those ebay power chips work?

MAF
Mass AirFlow sensor measures the amount of air going into cylinders. (About 20% of the air is oxygen which explodes when mixed with gasoline & spark). One crucial thing is MAF accuracy: cleaning the sensing element will probably boost accuracy, on some MAF types (like maxima) injection will increase. See links below.

Maxima VGE MAF heater-resistor [flat] and sensor element [blk/top/mid]:
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/9

Optimization
Optimum amount of Fuel is injected to consume most oxygen, 'all' gasoline. (Optimum= point of view from gasoline 'clean' burn). Optimization is done by ECU (computer) predermined table, injection controlled by ECU based on this optimization. Predetermination at mfg plant takes into account all regulations and maximized mpg (most often contradicting with max power requirements)

To increase horsepower, most critical is cylinder oxygen-fillup maximization. No 'resistor' will do this: only airflow streamlining. See one cent example http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/2 Serious increase means serious money shelled on packing more oxygen to cylinders =turbo.

Tweaking with ECU:
Increasing gasoline injection will create richer =non optimized condition. Many good&bad things happen (soot etc), on 'positive' side, also more oxygen 'explodes' creating more power up to a point.

Any electronics signal may be adjusted, below some links on the net concerning some MAF elements. Dont rush before selfecucating uself, decide first if youre able on electronics, then try to do what man has to do...
