Are M3's hard to find at Dealerships?

I read a Motortrend article saying only 3000 were coming to America. The article is almost about a year and a half old so I a want to know if they were talking about only 3000 in 2001 and more M3 E46's the next year and after? Or if the 3000 were the only M3 E46's coming to america for a while?
