What a Dork, I overfilled my power steering..now what??
Its leaking underneath the car at what looks like a little box that hoses go into. I have a 91 park avenue by the way. I'm so mad at myself for doing this. The power steering is not working. I should be shot |

Not clear, the p/s did not work before you over filled it, was it empty, does it leak, more info here.

Try a turkey baster (ask a cook) and then buy a new one.

Re: What a Dork, I overfilled my power steering..now what??
What kind of reply was that??
Someone please try and help me here. It is leaking at a little box type thing under the engine. Two hoses go into it and at the end is a U shape tube. ANY help will be appreciated. I don't wann suck out the fluid with a baster and buy a new one. How can I fix this one. Supposed to be some knowledgable car humans in here. I know someone can help me. If they choose to. And I hope you will. Jim

do what auto trainy said and use a baster to remove all the fluid. Next, inspect the hoses for leaks. If the unit itself is leaking elsewhere, then replace it.

Re: What a Dork, I overfilled my power steering..now what??
Hey jimmiejam...don't get your panties in a bunch. auto trainy was saying to use a turkey baster to get the excess fluid out and then buy a new TURKEY BASTER not a new car. If you have a better plan to get the fluid out the go that route. The thing I don't understand is how the pwr str was working before you filled it and now it's not. Overfilling a system like the pwr str system usually doesn't cause catastrophic failure. Plus, we really need better descriptions than 'a little box type thing under the engine'. Believe me...you will find help on this site, but you have to help us help you. MM.

Re: What a Dork, I overfilled my power steering..now what??
power steering fluid was low. was screeching alot when turning. Other than the screeching the steering was fine. This has happened before and I knew I was low on fluid because it solved the screeching before. I overfilled the resevoir past the cold line but not over real far. Next time I drove the car the power steering stopped working and there is a leak at the "little box thing" under the engine on the passenger side. If I new better how to explain this I would. Jim

Re: What a Dork, I overfilled my power steering..now what??
The little box thing, does it have hoses going into it? Does it have a rod going into it? The power steering has some basic parts, and I think we are trying to narrow it down to help.
Power steering can leak from the pump, which is where you fill the fliuid, the hoses, or the steering box.

That "little box thing" that everyone is referring to happens to be the power steering cooler. You'll need to replace it to stop the leak.
