EGR Valve question

(85 IROC 305 TPI) Does anyone know what the device that the vacuum lines to the EGR valve come from is called and/or have a part number for it? Do the vacuum lines have seperate part numbers? The problem is that the vacuum lines are snapped off because of the previous owner of the car, they are very small hardened vacuum lines and I would prefer to have them replaced with a stock setup over some hacked together rubber hoses, etc.. Also, what is the purpose of the EGR Temp Switch and what would the car do if it was not hooked up (best guesses??)? Thanks a ton.

Re: EGR Valve question

you can get the line at any auto parts store, it comes in a coiled package. cut it to the length you need and use a blow dryer to heat it up to bend it to the shape you need. the lines hook to the EGR solenoid, valve and to the throttlebody.
The EGR switch is a bi-metalic device that when heated up produces a micro voltage signal that is sent to the ECM. When the ECM requests EGR, a ground is applied to the solenoid, the valve opens, the hot exhaust gasses heat up the switch and it generates the signal back to the ECM. If the ECM doesn't see this feedback signal (either because the valve didn't open or the switch is unhooked) it will set a code 32.

Re: EGR Valve question

Strange.... the EGR Switch and the EGR has been disconnected on the car since I got it and the check engine light does not come on. I do however believe that this is the reason the car stalls so much when it is cold out. Thanks for the information Morley.

Re: EGR Valve question

a stuck or inoperative EGR can cause very irratic idle speed.
can be too low one minute and too high the next.

I once had a problem with this and it was confusing the ECM and was running the IAC motor in and out and it couldnt find a "set" point that it was happy with

Re: EGR Valve question

Exactly what mine is doing.... and it also bucks when driving it if I take it out when it is doing that.
