Good Stuff To Know ! Everyone ! G Van Engine Change

Here are some interesting things I found out while changing the engine in my 88 3/4 ton G van TBI 5.7 ... I had Sudden low oil pressure I found the oil pump drive shaft coupling broken and the shaft was whipping around in there it had score marks around it ...(I got an aftermarket all steel shaft and coupling for the new engine ) The EGR valve holes under the EGR were completely clogged in the old engine with Carbon (175 K miles )...The Exhaust bolts on BOTH manifolds all six of them were rusted in so bad they broke off and I had to drill all six of them out and re-tap them ...I am replacing them with standard 5/16 stainless bolts hopefully these will come out better in the future ... I found that using a mobile engine hoist (cherry picker ) is the only way to go getting that engine out ! ...I bought a hoist and plan to sell it when I get my engine changed the rental place wanted 25 dollars a day ! and I figured I would need the hoist at least a week ...Don't try to use the "Leveller " on the hoist it won't fit in there you have to get the arm of the hoist down as close to the engine as you can ! or you can't raise the engine up far enough to get it out ... Another thing I found out was to put the van on 4 sturdy wheel ramps and keep it there while removing the engine because you have to go under the van a lot and with the engine hoist you can raise the engine plenty high enough to get it out with the van on the ramps...And finally if you are going to change the engine on your G - van allow yourself plenty of time ! it is a BIG time consuming job ... I am now at the point of re-installing my new replacement engine and I started on this job 03-03-2006 and it is now 03-17-2006 and I am half done ...

happy St Patricks day ! everyone Bob in Michigan
