Thinking of taking out my spotlight after reading this. I would have thought the airbag would have deployed.

yeah like a steak knife, less pain when you do get in a accident, but in your sig, it looks like your spotlight is already gone

If I were a betting man, I would say that the cop did not have his saftey belt on. A Crash at 35 miles per hour would cause the seatbelt to lock and not let him be propelled into the spot light.

My thinking would have to agree with broughy84. Your seat belt should help stop you before you go that far. If he was not wearing a seat belt, then you cannot blame the air bags. Every vehicle has warnings that air bags (or supplemental restraints) are designed to work with, not replace seat belts. Think about it: seat belts with their lamp and shoulder harnesses hold your waist and torso in place while your head can still move freely. The airbag helps to restrain you head. So without the seat belt, your body can still move and airbag may not stop you properly.

Seems to me that if it was a real problem we would have hear a lot more accounts of this.
There are risks in anything, including driving. There are stories of people being saved in accidents by not wearing their seat belts, but in the vast majority of accidents, seat belts and air bags will help. There are stories of people being killed because of air bags, are you going to disable those too? I'm not saying to ignore the story, just keep perspective. #1 safety tip, drive defensively. Its an oldie but goodie.
