98 Yukon Not going in Reverse, Trouble 1st to 2nd

The other day while driving we heard a loud noise, jolt under us and then the Yukon seemed to slow a bit and have trouble accelerating. Then we noticed when we pulled to a stop that it would not go in reverse and when putting on the accelerator it revs at 2000 rpms going at about 40 mph. Also it seems to have a VERY hard time going from 1st to 2nd gear, after that its ok I guess (other than not being able to go in reverse - gear linkage?) Apparently it is not the transmission otherwise we couldn't drive it at all. We just had the front end differential replaced a few months ago and now this! We only have about 120k miles on it and we only drive it about 150 miles a week. Wondering if its time to turn in our poor Yukon that we love so much as we have put in about 3-5k in the last couple years on repairs from everything from the timing to differential and now this. Any thoughts? Thanks!
