99 GT Alarm Sensitivity
My 1999 GT stock alarm is getting too sensitive. Loud noises will set it off. Is there a way to change the sensitivity, or disconnect it all together? Any advice is appreciated!

Re: 99 GT Alarm Sensitivity
I assume you have no owners manual? The instructions are in there if you do have one.

Re: 99 GT Alarm Sensitivity
I agree with Rich. Depending on your model Grand Prix the alarm system sensitivity is adjusted differently to include disabling it. The procedure should be in the owner's manual. Look for something similar below or if without manual try this:
Locate MALL PGM fuse. Remove this fuse and then turn the key to ACC (Turn back towards driver one notch). The sensitivity of the shock sensor is then controlled by turning the parking lights on and off. Each time this is done a different # of chimes is played. Each chime count references a different sensitivity from high all the way down to turning off the theft-alarm all together

Re: 99 GT Alarm Sensitivity
Correct - I don't have an owner's manual.
I followed your instructions and was able to change the setting. However, since I don't have a manual, I'm not sure exactly what setting it's on now. It chimed 4 times initially, and I changed it to 1 chime. The alarm sounds when I try to open the door, but not when I bump the car or kick the tires. So I'm hoping it's on reduced sensitivity now. Thanks for the advice! |

The 4 shock sensor control modes are: Mode 1 If vehicle is seriously damaged and/or door or trunk is opened when system is activated, an alarm will sound and park lights will falsh for up to 2 minutes. Mode 2 If door or trunk is opened when system is armed, an alarm will sound and park lights will flash for up to 2 minutes. Mode 3 System is always disarmed. Mode 4 If vehicle is damaged and/or someone enters vehicle when system is armed, an alarm will sound and park lights will flash up to 2 minutes. The chime will sound a number of times equal to the currently set mode. To save settings, after programming to the mode of your choice take ignition switch to off and replace the MALL PGM fuse.

Re: 99 GT Alarm Sensitivity
Mine must be on "4" Bob, I guess those owner manuals come in handy maybe I should read mine!! By the way I never did find an adjustment behind the access panel but this should do the trick

Re: 99 GT Alarm Sensitivity
My car didn't come with an owners manual either, but I picked one up on e-bay for less than $10. There's a lot of useful info in there, believe it or not. It is worth the investment to get one. I also found a complete set of GM service manuals for $70. The factory service manuals are VERY technical, and may overwhelm a novice. Heck, I sometimes get a headache from them, and I at least like to "think" I know what I'm talking about.

![]() BTW - I have never owned a new or used car that did not come with one. I thought that is the reason why they have gloveboxes.
