'92 3.1L Fuel Filter Replacement

Fuel Filter Replacement:

Just wanted to know if the fuel pressure needs to be relieved using a fuel gage/tester at the Schrader valve or if removing the gas cap is enough? Also, is it easy to get the connector on/off? Haynes says one thing, shop manual says another. I figured its better to ask people with experience first. Thanks in advance.

It is better to relieve the pressure at the fuel rail with a fuel pressure gauge tester. The gas cap has no effect on the built up pressure in your fuel rail. If you can't relieve the pressure, be very careful, as you probably already know, the gas will spray out when you take the compression nut off of the filter. I would have a rag ready to wrap around the fitting, wear eye protection and have a catch pan under your work. Also, be sure there is no heat, spark, or fire source around, and plenty of ventilation when you do this.

The slip on interlock fitting that may be on one side of your filter could be one of many types of connectors. On my car, I simply had to squeeze both side of the interlock mechanism to relieve the little catch on each side of the ridge in the tubing of the filter, and pull the hose off. It was a little tricky, but I managed to get it off.

I always relieve the pressure first, by placing a rag around the schrader valve and using a small screwdriver to release the pressure. Only a little comes out.
