Brake indicator light

'97 Buick Skylark

I know that I need front brake pads and probably rear shoes and am wondering if the indicator light will come on when either get too low. If the light does come on, how soon do I have before replacing them.

Right now I could use as much time as I can get or else I would just get them done. Thanks

Al

Re: Brake indicator light

There is no light that will come on when the pads are low. There may not even be an early warning indicator on the pads. If you suspect they are low, you should at least have them checked, it should be free at the large brake chains. If you let them run right down to the metal you may do some damage to the rotors and it will cost you more in the long run. Pads are extremely cheap and if you know someone with a little bit of mechanical knowledge you could change them yourself for about $20. You have to ask yourself "How much is it worth to actually be able to stop in a panic situation"?
