98 windstar window lift motor

My driver side power window stopped working and I was reading a thread where someone had taken the motor out and cleaned the brushes. Sounded like a good idea. I got the motor out with no problem, cleaned it, and went to put it back in, however it is not going back as easily as it came out. For some reason I just can't get it in. If anyone has any advice on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
I did not remove the gear box. Thats what I'm trying to get the motor to seat into.

Hello

I believe you're talking about my post. I found that getting the motors back together took a little working, moving things around.

I got better after my second one. However, I take most every thing apart that I find that doesn't work. My average of back together is increasing.

Back to the motor. What makes this hard is the fact that there is very little room to work and everything has a sharp edge! Getting the worm gear meashed with the other gear and getting the shaft aligned with the bushing in the housing without loosing the brush placement....

I believe I used a clamp with blocks of wood to hold the window up.

This is just one of those things that I just keeped working at until it slipped back together.

By the way....both of my windows quit within a week of each other. Both are still working today.

Please post back if you have more questions.

Regards

Dan

Re: 98 windstar window lift motor

Good luck. The passenger side window in my 98 quit working. I pulled the motor and discovered it worked fine when not bolted in. Turned out that the gears inside the gear box were chewed up, so I ended up getting a whole new motor, gear box, and lift mechanism.

Re: 98 windstar window lift motor

I ended up taking the regulator out. I had to drill some holes in the door panel to get to the screws but all in all it was pretty easy. Once I had the regulator out, it took about 20 mins to mate the motor to it. Then just had to remount with three screws. I wish I had done this to begin with. Now I have no power to the motor. This was my original issue. I took the motor out in the first place to make sure it was good before I started troubleshooting wiring. Thanks for your replies.

Now that you mention taking the regulator out, I believe I did that too....one of the times.....

It's amaising what I've done....but It's more amaising what I've forgotten! Oh well....I guess that is what happens when one turns the big 40....

Re: 98 windstar window lift motor

Check out this thread...it describes your case. I cleaned/lubed the motor and got about a week worth of function out of the R pass power window...then it quit again. As you mentioned...I think the plastic gearing gets chewed up and offers too much resitance for motor to turn. I ended up pulling regulator and replacing motor AND gearbox assy. You can really only buy them as a unit (expect maybe a boneyard). cost ~ $80 at rockauto.com.
