I have had a persistent coolant leak for quite some time now with no luck finding it.
Well today I found it and I wish I hadn’t. The leak is coming from the top of the engine just behind the AC compressor where there are not any cooling hoses. It is very difficult to see. I think I’m #$%* . Does anyone know what might be going on? |

Re: Coolant leak behind AC compressor (98)
Could it be leaking form your thermostat tube, mounted on top of your engine ??????????? it connects to a rubber hose near the back of your AC...

Re: Coolant leak behind AC compressor (98)
If its not the radiator hose (doubt it) that runs back there, welcome to the intake manifold gasket club. The water passages in the head to the intake are right up front and the classic leak is out the gasket between the intake and the block (look from the front of the Blazer as it idles behind and above the water pump and you may see the leak at the mating area) or the leak is water seeping out the top edge of the intake along the valve cover in that V area (hard to see as often small and evaporates before it runs off either end running down the front or rear of the block). The back of the engine has 2 other water passages that are blocked and do not flow into the intake but can also leak. The new gasket set comes with RTV sealer to seal the front and rear as well as add to the water passage seal area. DO NOT delay fixing cause this is most likely leaking into the engine under the intake into the lifters/counter balance shaft/cam area (mine all have) and even if you see no water in the oil it sprays in and evaporates also but can trash the engine over time.

Re: Coolant leak behind AC compressor (98)
Yes, by all means. if its the intake, FIX IT, do not wait. If you wait it may end up costing you a new engine. Trust me on this one, I have done went down this road.

Re: Coolant leak behind AC compressor (98)
If it is the intake leaking, it will be most noticable during cold startup. Mine would actually bubble at cold startup which is how I noticed it. The leak was very small, same spot, behind the AC compressor. The new gasket was sealed with a thick grey sealant.

Re: Coolant leak behind AC compressor (98)
Been there, done that. I also have a 98. Check this thread out and look at post 11. That is where my gasket was leaking.

Re: Coolant leak behind AC compressor (98)
No problem. Just make sure you have everything before you start. I check the board at least twice a day. Just ask the questions here if you need anymore info. Good luck.
