checking codes on a 95 grand am?? And other issues.

Hello I just purchased a 1995 grand am 3.1 with 148500 miles.

The check engine light came on and I wanted to retrieve the code/s.
However the obd-1 connector lacks a "B" pin. So I can't use the paper clip trick.

Is there anyway to check the codes without a scanner?
Autozone said they couldn't do it. They could only handle obd-2.

On a side note the car seems to be leaking oil from every gasket and all but 2 plugs had heavy carbon deposits.
Do these cars have problems with valve seals or could it be an intake gasket leak?

You need a "real" scanner to check codes on a 95, the engine should be cleaned up and then checked for the exact source of the leaks.

Thats what I figured. Thanks for the reply.

I'm not looking forward too hunting down all the leaks.
Changing any of the gaskets looks like a real nightmare on this car.

I've never seen more hoses, wires, and sensors in one compartment.

I used to be a Ford Tech so th GM world is new to me.
I'm not trying to start a GM vs. Ford thing either.

Checking online I see a couple of different versions of intake gasket sets.
One with pushrod guides in the gasket the other without.
Any way to tell what you have before pulling the intake?
I hate stopping in the middle of a job for a parts run.
