Post SVS light wont clear.....

haha! heres one for you guys, I just got this GA GT and the SvS light was on, figured it was a high beam or the gas cap, it was neither.
So today, I ran 3 diagnostic tests on it, and it says all clear and no trouble codes. Used two differnt hand held devices, and my computer setup(which is very lengthy), and still nothing! So, I am baffled!

In the mean time, I hav the battery out to see if that does the trick.
By all means if any one has seen this before please let me know. I'd just like to kill the SVS light, and that damn alarm on start up.

Thanks XI !

Re: SVS light wont clear.....

I'm assuming its obd2, which means removing the battery probably won't do it. You should be able to turn it off with the scanner. Any drivability issues, and does everything check out ok when you drive it with the scanner hooked up?

Re: SVS light wont clear.....

YA its odb2, and you are correct on the battery too.
I cruised 40+miles today with the scanner, and then a lap top and everythings reading well within tollerance and no errors... nothings getting hot, transmission checked ok, all the wire loops are clean and intact through out the car.
Drives and runs great!
I bought the car from a dealer and they said they couldnt figure it out either, go figure.

I really thought it was the fuel cap, because when I checked it out the lip of the opening, where the gasket should rest, was dusty like it wasnt making contact with the gas cap, replaced the cap but that didnt solve it.

I'll just hav to spend some "quality time" with it tomarrow and give my head a rest

Re: SVS light wont clear.....

What year is this GA GT? Was that SVS or SES light?

The SVS light - Service Vehicle Soon really has nothing to do with obd-ii emissions related problems. It indicates a fault with the safety systems of the vehicle and will give off an annoying chime. There are several possibilities. A few things that can give a SVS light are a defective DRL module, the auto headlight system/light control, burned out headlamp, brake lights, etc. When you replace the defective part the light should extinguish.

Even a bad hub bearing/wheel sensor can give a SVS light but it is normally accompanied by an ABS and Trac off light.

Re: SVS light wont clear.....

its a 99' gt 3.4, sorry guys! Forgot the most important part, MY bad!

Thanks bnaylor3400.
It is the SVS, not the SES.
I didnt know the hubs could fault the SvS , its the only light on(and that damn chime)!
I'm sure I'll find it in the morning, just didnt want to spend all morning on it.

Re: SVS light wont clear.....

Took it for another drive this evening, and I do believe it is a wheel sensor.
Every time you shift from driv to revrs or hit the littlest bumps the Low trac light pops on.

Then after a hard driv w/traction contrl off, soon after I turned it back on, the Low trac & ABS light came on and stayed on.
Turned the car off and back on, they went away.
Now to do it with the scanners running.
Thankx again bnaylor3400, helped out alot!

Not a problem Xero and you're welcome. Sometimes we have to think outside of the box when it comes to Grand Ams and Aleros.

BTW - Also, checkout the wiring to the wheel sensors and the electrical connector at each hub. Check the big electrical connector at the ABS motor/modulator located on the driver's side of the subframe (front). The wheel sensors can be ohmed out with a multimeter and should read around 1K ohms across the two contacts.

Good luck!

I'm always thinking outside the box
That all sounds like the plan I had for today, but I was swamped and did get time to mess with it today.
But its at the top of my list! When I get time...

Thanks Bob!

Re: SVS light wont clear.....

just to update..

Still havnt goten it on the lift yet. But I am sure its one of the Wheel speed sensors. Did find some funny entries when runing Diag. Thinking someones been messing with it! And possibly one of the plugs hav been disconnected at the wheel, open circut
Hoping its the front ones, or is thier WS sensors in the rear.. cant remember. And I guess thiers a speed sensor on the tail of the trans I can check.
At least I fixed the runing hot with a new GM thermostat (which was cheaper than a cheap AZ one)

Re: SVS light wont clear.....

Welll it was several little things. The drl relay, one of the alc relays and the Ac compresser relay were replaced they were not functioning good at all.
Both front wheel speed sensors were 1 unpluged partially and the 2 had a bent prong(so it wasnt connected either).

What was funny was every night I drov the car, the ABS & Trac off would come on. Shut it off and they would go away. During the day the ABS & Trac off wouldnt come on.
But in the day my DRLs were intermitantly working not working. weird!

But the Wheel Speed Sensors checked OK and the SVS lights gone! YEH! No more chims!

Now for some exhaust work, is SLP a good set-up for the GAs?
