Like the title says, my 2002 Silverado has a loud metallic ping sound when releasing the brakes to accelerate from a stop. It sounds almost like hitting a 4 inch steel pipe with a hammer. Sometimes it doesn't happen when you release the brakes but then when you accelerate the sound occurs. Seems to be louder if there are bumps in the road as you accelerate from the stop. You can even feel it in the brake pedal right before the sound occurs, if that makes sense. There is a slight jerk forward that follows the sound but that could be normal I guess. It's an automatic transmission if that helps.
Anyone know where the sound could be coming from? Could it be the brakes not fully releasing? I checked the u-joint and the driveshaft has no play in it. Thanks Dustin |

Re: Loud Metallic PING Sound From Underneath?
First things to check would be the u-joints, they could be starting to go and they could still be tight. The pinging noise you are hearing could very well be the needle bearings being crushed in the bearing cups of the u-joints. Another thing that comes to mind is the emergency brakes, GM sells i think it is a clip upgrade kit for the emergency brakes because of a sticking issue. Now i don't know if the emergency brakes on these trucks get activated at all under normal braking or not, but i do not know anyone that owns an automatic that uses their emergency brakes when parking unless on a steep grade, but i do know that i have never used the emergency brakes on my truck in the almost 3 years i have owned it and can not speak for the guy i bought it from but on the drivers side it is metal to metal. I am wondering if in your case if it is possible that the ping noise you hear could be the emergency brake shoe bracket (minus the lining cause it is worn out) is sticking a bit and after you release the pedal the spring pulls the emergency brakes back and the bare metal of the worn out emergency brake hits the drum causing the noise you hear. I know under normal driving before i found this out on my truck i would hear a metal to metal rattle that was driving me nuts, this noise went away after the emergency brakes were manually pulled back away from the drums, more specifically on the sticking drivers side..............Just a thought.

Re: Loud Metallic PING Sound From Underneath?
I too would be inclined to look for a problem involving the brake drum. The sound you describe reminds me of the way my mother used to round up me and my brother for meals. She banged on an old ford brake drum with a hammer. Served two purposes...first I could hear that 5 blocks away, and it was finally a good use for a ford part.

I've read a few things that say I should check the slip yoke at the back of the transmission and see if it needs greasing. May change the u-joint out too just to rule that out. Won't have a chance to climb under it until this weekend but I'm gonna check the rear brakes and the slip yoke and hopefully end that damn sound.
Wish me luck... -Dustin |
