Powershifting

What's the correct way to powershift with a standard transmission and 2.4liter nissan engine?

I was hearing it takes practice and if you do it wrong, you can blow the tranny, the engine, the rear end, snap the driveshaft, all the good stuff. I want to learn how to powershift in my 240sx, before I do in a faster, more expensive car. I want to perfect and get used to it, shifting at the right time. I was told there's a specific time to do it in every transmission...

What's everything you can tell me about how to powershift correctly?

Re: Powershifting

Just shift like normal, only faster... it's not abusive to the car (well, far less than power shifting.)

Learning how to do this technique in a 240sx so you don't screw up a more expensive car is rather... umm... weird, cause you won't get it right everytime. And like you said, it's different for every car, so once you get that more expensive car... you might flub it up and break your expensive to replace parts.

Do your wallet a favor, just learn to shift fast using the standard clutch in, gas off, shift, clutch out, gas on technique.

If you're fast, you'll be just as fast.

I see what you're saying but there's no alternative, no faster way to shift. Using the clutch and letting off the gas may hold your rpms but they won't raise them.

Plus, I'm always practicing fast clutch work anyway, so despite all of the warnings I want to know how, for racing purposes, not driving everywhere, to powershift.
Thanks

Re: Powershifting

its just rev matching

I know in my 240 from 2nd to 3rd you'd pull out of gear at round 3k and let it drop to around 2k an push it in
if you mess up you grind pretty bad

but there's no reason to powershift
it'll mess up things, its slower, and its a pain in the ass

That's not what I heard, why would your rpms drop if your foot is still on the accelerator? Correct me if i'm wrong on this, i've never powershifted before

Re: Powershifting

Well, go try it... and see why it's destructive to your drivetrain.

After about two or three times, you'll realise that the metal on metal gear grind is not a performance inspiring sound.

Plus, if you've got your foot barried in the carpet holding the gas down you'll most likely bounce off the rev limitor... which, is alright... I guess but it's not the best thing to do on purpose. It's there for accidents, not as an aid to driving.

Re: Powershifting

your talking about shifting withought a clutch right?

if you don't let the rpms drop the engine speed is too fast for the gear ratio that your trying to select, you'll grind hardcore

I heard from others, my auto shop teacher and some classmates, that powershifting is the fastest way to shift in the quarter mile. why would it be slower than using the clutch and letting off of the gas? I'm not trying to fight you guys. Isn't there anyone that powershifts here?

Re: Powershifting

dude unless you practice it ALL the time its going to take you alot more time than usein the clutch, and even if you get it down it might not even be faster.

so would you wanna f**k up your tranny to ATTEMPT to MAYBE be a LITTLE bit faster

or just use the clutch and smoke them when they grind cuz they messed up

Re: Powershifting

hmmm i thought powershifting was shifting using the clutch and not letting off the gas...isnt that what hes talking about? maybe im just off here but...i dunno.

i clutchless upshift and downshift all the time just fucking around in traffic, and i must do it right because my tranny is still in great shape. and its not any quicker because you have to wait for the revs to match anyways and that takes more time than letting the synchros even out the shaft speeds.

Yeah, i'm so confused because NOW i went to the technical part of the forum and searched through a couple old threads, and THEY said that you can powershift at WOT with the clutch in. I just want a straight answer.

Re: Powershifting

oooo
he probably is talking about just using the clutch with the peddle to the floor
that's way fun
especially in the rain

my bad I got the whole powershifting and clutchless shifting mixed up

Re: Powershifting

Now that I've done some research, I have a few questions, I heard it's helpful to have a short shifter, is this true?

Is a sequential shifter is better for powershifting since you'll never grind gears, or practically never..? Is it worth the cost?

virtually how much speed is lost from powershifting using the clutch to powershifting without it?

I know I'll have more questions tomorrow lol

1.) yes
2.) sequential shifters are better, expensive.. yes
3.) depends on how fast you can shift with out fucking up, I'd use the clutch method
