Crankshaft/Rod Bearings

Let's just say it's been a bad day...

Much to my dismay I fired up my engine after washing my car this afternoon and was promptly greeted by the noise of a knocking piston. I took it to the nearest mechanic shop immediately only to find out that I was missing 2 liters of oil. In short, one (or more don't know yet) of my rod bearings is shot and I have to rip off the oil pan and see if my crank is still in tact.

Now I have taken apart engines before but not a twin cam. What I want to know is if I can repair such a problem from underneath the car or do I have to pull the engine to access everything.

I'm asking because if I can I want to repair this myself. I was quoted at $1200 in labour nevermind the price of replacement parts. I was promptly told that it would be almost cheaper to buy a brand new engine.

I've also been browsing the net looking for prices on a crankshaft and rod bearings without much luck. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Crankshaft/Rod Bearings

Well I guess no one has a reply to this, so thanks anyways. I've already started ripping the engine apart and got the info I need.
