HELP Trooper 2.8 td wont start

Hi All
Trooper overheated and blew head gasket, stripped down and replaced gasket, all looks well double checked that i havent missed anything out,
turns over but will not start, took off oil filler cap and can see little bit of smoke as i turn her over, primed the pump, but just wont fire.
Its a 92 2.8 TD, doesnt use timing belt good old push rods, so dont think timing is the problem!
I dont have much to do with diesels so new to diagnosing the problem
