98' camshaft sensor

I was driving my 98' cutlass gls with 3.1l the other day and the check engine light came on upon start up after stopping for gas. I through my scanner on and it said it was the camshaft sensor. now i wouldn't thing it would be able to run if it was bad, but the thing purrs like a kitten. And never came on agin the rest of the trip. Just in case i'd like to know where it would be located at on this engine.
Another thing that is wierd is the abs and brake light will come on every 20 min. of driving for at least a second then turn off. No codes on it or anything. Abs does work fine. Just annoying for it to turn on while driving it. any suggestions.

Re: 98' camshaft sensor

Assuming you have a 3.1 L V-6 ...the CPS is located on the top of the engine - passenger side.

If you were to remove the powersteering pump and the upper intake manifold (plenum), you will see a bolt with a wire attached - this is the CPS.

I replaced mine when I did my Intake Manifold Gasket. What had happened was when the hot coolant leaked on to the top if the engine, it would puddle around the CPS. This caused the wire harness to fray, that exposed the wires that set off the sensor.

My car also ran fine, but if if was to get worse and not function the car will not run. If the CPS senses the Camshaft in the wrong position, it will not start the car.

My advice is to go the the Malibu section of http://www.automotiveforums.com.

I also own a 1998 Cutlass and the Malibu section addressed a lot of my problems. This Cutlass section seems to be for older culasses and cieras.
The 1998 Cutlass and Malibu are the same car with all the same problems.
