2nd gen DOHC swap

das2123, i have a good feeling your gonna make this easy for me..i've been trying to find info on this swap for 2nd gens, but i dont know if it's identicle to sohc to dohc swaps on 1gens.., obviously 2nd gen is sohc.., is this worth swapping in the 2.0dohc?..is it hard, like making new engine mounts, or is the motor a direct bolt on?..i know i'd need the dohc computer., but thats all i know pretty much..any info would be great..haha...thanx

Re: 2nd gen DOHC swap

If you are wanting a little more power you can do a SOHC Magnum Head, intake manifold and computer upgrade and come out with the same 150hp as the Dohc with a lot less effort.

Re: 2nd gen DOHC swap

neondawo, you can put the 1st gen DOHC engine into a 2nd gen, but it's not real popular. Most people opt for the Magnum engine or better yet the 2.4 engine swap. I'd go with the 2.4 swap because you can obviously make more power with the 2.4DOHC than you would the 2.0SOHC magnum. One of the problems with the DOHC swap is the ECU.

Re: 2nd gen DOHC swap

but it's not real popular==>...thats another reason why i'd like to do it.., i dont really care about the power, if i wanted power, i'd buy a srt-4 and mod that.., but i'd like something different than others around here..so what do you mean there's ECU problems?..how would i have to fix them?..thanx

The biggest thing would be the pcm. Remember the 2g clusters are a bus data rather then the 1st gen magnet style. Wiring harness from the DOHC would be needed, as it is different from the 2nd gen ones. Also there is no passenger side mounting brackets that exist for you to bolt the DOHC engine into your car...you will have customize this.

These are a few things I can come up with off the top of my head. If I were doing this swap, which I wouldn't, I'd get the DOHC engine and wiring harness and a first gen cluster to swap in. I don't know if this would work because some sensors may be different. So I don't think it would be plug and play. This would be a swap you may have to do on your own without much help from others because like I said, it's not a popular swap. Most people want to go with more power like the 2.4.

Re: 2nd gen DOHC swap

If it's power you are looking for, I would suggest a Turbo on the engine you have.
The SRT 2.4l swap works b/c it is designed to work in a 2nd gen. If you are looking to put in a 2.4l (non SRT) or 2.0L Dohc you may have some really large obsticles in your way. Mounting the DOHCs (2.4 or 2.0) would be the easy part compared with the Engine Management mess you are going to have.
Buy a 1st Gen project car and then put in whatever engine you want, it would be much easier that way.

Re: 2nd gen DOHC swap

oh..alrite.., maybe i'll just stick with the magnum head., i figured this would be neat to have dohc 2.0L in a 2gen, but by the sounds of it, i dont think i'll do that anymore.., thanx das2123

Don't mean to discourage you, but it's one of the harder swaps for the neon. A magnum engine would be good, but I vote for the 2.4 swap

Re: 2nd gen DOHC swap

The 2.4 SRT and the 2.4 Non-SRT use different controllers and sensors. You can put the 2.4 SRT setup in a 2nd Gen and then use the Stage1 MP controller ( b/c it doesn't do a VIN# security check), it is much easier than swapping in a non-SRT 2.4l non-turbo setup.
If you do a SRT transplant, it is helpful to buy the whole car and take what you need from the donor car to make things work.
