frustrating fuel filter

ok i got a new fuel filter to put on my jeep and we followed the fuel line all the way to the motor but there is no fuel filter any where we could see...now the jeep is starting to choke out at 25 to 30 mph and i dont know what the deal is but am assuming it is because no fuel filter....how and where do i install my fuel filter so i can get y jeep running top notch again?

a little more info is needed year of jeep, 6 or 4 cyclinder

If your problem was caused by a lack of a fuel filter, then you likely have some other fuel components that are now clogged and/or dirty. Simplying adding a fuel filter will not clean these.

The location depends on your year/model, as Thinmints says.

As others have said, its hard to tell without knowing what year Jeep you have.
If the filter isnt along the inside of the frame rail on the drivers side, just in front of the rear axle, then its in the tank and a real PITA to change.

sorry i forgot to mention that. it is a 86 jeep cherokee 4wd with a v6 engine

I have a '96 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 with a 4.0 inline 6. The fuel filter is just about above the rear axle on the driver side of the vehicle. Be ready to collect becuase it dumped probably 1/2 gallon of fuel on me when I changed mine. Good luck!

its in frount of the rear driverside wheel. its up on the fraim of the jeep.

The fuel filter is located inside the fuel inlet nut at the carburetor. It's made of either pleated paper or porous bronze and cannot be cleaned or reused. You will need two wrenches, flare nut wrenches if available.

The fuel filter in in back of the car, in frount of the rear tire. Right? Or are we talking about 2 different things?

According to the haynes manual it is in the place i quoted, but it is possible that there is a bigger, normal one at the location that you said also.

Easy way to solve this. Put_101 is the engine in your jeep carb. or fuel inj.? If it's carb then the fuel filter is inside the air cleaner housing that sits on top of the carb. If it's fuel inj. then the filter is on the inside of the driver side frame rail above the rear axle.
