Angry Cooling Fan Staying on in 1991 Accord EXR

As most Accord owners know, there are 2 fans under the hood. One cools the car while driving, the other cools it AFTER driving when car is off. My problem is that the fan that cools car after car is off kicks in often several hours later and stays on (I realize it is supposed to stay on a little while after car is shut of). But my fan kicks in even 10 hours after driving and stays on until battery is dead! By removing the fuse, I can prevent this battery drain.

Questions:

1. Anyone know why fan is coming on such a long time after car is off (and staying on). How can I stop it?

2. What is the purpose of this fan (otherwords, can I remove the fuse permanently and cause no damage?). Is the only purpose that it helps car cool in case you only shut if off for a few minutes then drive again?

Please help.....Peter

cooling fan staying on-relay sticking?

Hey Diesel_uk. Thanks for the info-but what relay is sticking? How much to change it-can this be done myself or not? How do you know it is not a bad thermal sensor instead-is there a giveaway saying it's the relay?

Appreciate it if you could answer these questions,

Pete

Hiya mate it can be many thing but most of the time its the rely ( also thats the cheapest one to change first ) should cost no more tna 10$ as its only £3 here. Also you could remove your themostat and boil it in water to see if the rubber ring expands etc. But i think this would be the first step.

. Anyone know why fan is coming on such a long time after car is off (and staying on). How can I stop it?

THE RELAY STCKS AND WHEN ITS 2cLICKS OVER" TWO WAYS TO GO ABOUT IT FIRST CHANGE THE RELAY AND SEE IF THAT WORKS ( IT SHOULD) OR CHANGE THE THEMOSTAT ( THE METAL PART END OF THE RUBBER PIPE WHICH CONTROLS THE TEMP. ON THAT NORE DO YOU HAVE PROBLEM'S WHEN YOUR CAR IS RUNNING TEMP WISE AND IF SO WHEN YOU PUT THE COLD AIR HEATER ON DOES IT MAKE A DIFERENCE? PLEASE LET US KNOW)

aLSO WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO TELL IF THE FAN HAS BEEN HARDWIRED HAS SOMBOPDY TAMPERED WITH THE FAN / HAVE YOU HAD YOUR CAR REPAIRED LATELY? IF SO LOOK AT THE FANA ND ITS WIRING .RELAY WISE TWO BOXES ONE UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE DASHBVOARD AND NORMALLY THAT HAS SMALL FUSES ( I DONT KNOW IF YOUE CAR/SPEC HAS THEM THERE) ALSO THERE IS THE RELAY BOX ( HAS ALL THE RELAYS IN ) UNDER THE HOOD NEAR THE BATTERY TRY FINDING IT THERE AND REPLACING IT WITH ANOTHER ONE FROM THE BOX AND SEE IF THAT ITEM DOES/DOES NOT WORK SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL

2. What is the purpose of this fan (otherwords, can I remove the fuse permanently and cause no damage?). Is the only purpose that it helps car cool in case you only shut if off for a few minutes then drive again?

the porpose of the fan is to keep your car running at optimal conditions ( cars run at certain temp ) keep fuel air etc at right conditions

if you remve the fuse you will damage your car ( when your car is idle yourt temp will rise to a dangerous level. If you cant finx it YOU CAN HARD WIRE IT SO YOU HAVE A LEVER SWITCH IN THE CAR WHEN YOUR TEMOP GETS ABOVE THE MIDDLE MARKER YOU SWITCH IT ON AND WHEN YOU LEAVE THE CAR YOU CAN SWTICH IT OFF.Its easy and i thinka nbybody can help you with that simple on / off switch IF YOU DO FIT THAT FIT I SWTICH WITH A L.E.D. SO IF YOU SWITCH IT ONA ND LEAVE IT ON YOU WILL REMEMBER TO SWITCH IT OFF ( WILL KILL YOUR BATTERY AS IT COMSUMES SERIOUS AMP'S)) I HOPE THIS HELP MATE

Thank you Diesel U.K.!

Hey Diesel U.K.

I just wanted to write to say how much I appreciated your advice regarding my cooling fan problem. 2 days ago I tried interchanging my "cooling fan relay" with my "power window relay". When I did, the power windows wouldn't work. I switched the relays back, and then the windows worked. This pretty much proved the relay was shagged!

So I got one from a junk yard (he gave it to me for free), Honda wanted 25 quid for it! Since then the car has started (it has only been 2 days-I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch just yet), but it certainly beats jumpstarting my car which I did for a month on a daily basis-so far, so good. I find it hard to believe the problem was so simple...

Anyway, I have been monitoring my battery with a volt meter a few times a day, and so far the battery has stayed at 12.5 volts (a good thing).

So many thanks for your time and patience with my question....

It is really greatly appreciated....

Take care,

Peter

hello Peter and thanks ( makes you feek good when you can help somone)

its nice to see your problem sorted and its working fine if you do have any prolems ( not including your domestics lol) free free to post or mail me .

Most problems can be sorted by means of thinking or asking .Deals have a problem and thats "Bastardisng" and they allways charge more justifying it by large costs and rates etc. i had a prolem with a car cost me £300 to try to sort it and it was not even a problem an dwe had to threTEN COURT TO get the money back.Anyway long story short YOUR WELCOME PETER

hey diesel_uk. im having a fan problem as well. except its the opposite of what peteyb dealed with. the problem is, is that the fan would not turn on while driving to keep her cool while red/green light city driving. when the a/c is running it helps a little bit. but than it wont work at all and we would be driving at hot temps (not sure how hot but hot) which i really dont like. the tranny was going out which made her run hot constantly. so we rebuilt and it helped a lot. could it be the relay like peteyb had? keep in mind that the car is 10yrs. old with 243K on the odometer. she is keep in good condition. tune ups, replacing aging parts, and keeped well lubricated. :bandit: oh yea 1992 acc. lx f22a1 orig. engine

Some Engines make their fan come on ONLY when its needed ( when it goes obver the red line)
You have to run your engine idle ( warms up faster) and see when the fan come on if it does not we could work up from there too. Also you have to make sure you have enough COOLANT in the expantion tank.

when the a/c is running it helps a little bit. but than it wont work at all and we would be driving at hot temps (not sure how hot but hot) which i really dont like.

that might has somthing to do with your witch i think.

I AM ABOUT 80 % THATS ITS THE RELAY WITH IT PLAYING UP BEFOPRE YOU MAY HAVE POPPED IT (MIGHT HAVE WASTED)

she is keep in good condition. tune ups, replacing aging parts, and keeped well lubricated. oh yea 1992 acc. lx f22a1 orig. engine

TRY THE ABOVE AND IF NOT WE COULD try other things try relaya nd hwat i told peter too.

the fans won't start until the car reaches 234F. the realy is located in the fuse box above the passanger front strut tower.

OT: what was wrong with your tranny ? mine is having only one wheel pulling at a time and sometimes it really jerks when changes gears so it busted 2 of my mounts

hondaman_iac the tranny was a good 10yrs. with some miles on it. so the car was overheating and we had a dignostics test ran on it. and found out that the tranny was really wearing out (actually 4TH gear) and sometimes we would get some kind of light turned on when we start it and wont be able to shift the gears to get to where we want to go. i dont know why all power is going to that one gear. maybe something connected from the tranny to the axel took a shit. (just threw that in the air) :bandit:
