I just cleaned my throttle body 10 minutes ago
WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MADE.
Not only for more stable Idle but for anything related to throttle response, I'm 110% satisfied. Park the car sideways so the drivers side is down the slope or jack the pasenger side of the car to you can put a rag under the throttle body opening and the filth drops on it. I sprayed the crap out of the butterfly valve, in and out, then black gooey stuff started pouring down, when it was done I fired up the car and once it got past the stumbling all I could hear is the sound of a smooth running engine. Now you probably shouldn't do it but since so much shit went out I sprayed more (hear : 3 or 4 10-15 seconds sprays all around) of it inside the intake, IAC hole and past the butterfly valve while the car was idling and held up the throttle cable as it wanted to stall and even more shit came out! I don't plan on spraying again when Idling but if it was never done I'd do it again just to start on a good note and be sure it's squeaky clean. If you were ever hesitating about spraying this shit clean stop asking and start spraying seriously. My '98 camry is 262 000kms it feels like 120 000 again. |

Re: I just cleaned my throttle body 10 minutes ago
Did mine two days ago. Good tip about tilting the car so all the soy sauce lookin stuff drains out. My idle seems a bit better.
Today I did the Seafoam thing. Lots of white smoke. Now runs a little better still. Unfortunatley the white smoke revealed a leak in the manifold gasket. |

Re: I just cleaned my throttle body 10 minutes ago
Only problem for me is that it seemed to accentuate an annoying noise that was there before sometimes that sounds like a bearing in the timing belt compartment not moving properly. It was intermittent before but it did it the loudest I've heard yet when coming back from a friend's house 20 minutes ago.
I don't think any of the cleaner could get in there so this is why I'm sceptical about this possibility but it really does sounds like when you spin a skateboard wheel that has a really worn bearing, but a lot louder on the left hand side of the engine... and about tilting the car : I got that from a couple sites, most of the crap pours back out of the TB and since the IAC valve hole is just a bit off to the right it doesn't flow in it so less soy sauce in your engine. |

It's also a good idea to clean the back side of the butterfly valve. That's the side that is really dirty. Obviously you have to do this with the engine off. Have someone hold the accelerator pedal to the floor while you work on the backside of the valve. It's really deep in there so spraying and using an old toothbrush works well. Put it all back together and start the car and run all that throttle body cleaner out of there.

Sounds like could be idler and / or tensioner bearings. When I replaced the timing belt at 120,000 miles, I had new bearings on hand, both of the old bearings made noise when turned by hand. These are all on the left side. Seems less likely to me, but possibly could be a water pump bearing also - in that case would suspect you'd see slight leakage first. Don't think cleaning the butterfly valve would have any affect on this. -------------------------- If you decide to go to the next step, the factory service manual has steps for cleaning the throttle body off the car. When you do that you can get the vacuum ports for the EGR modulator, and adjust the throttle position sensor which most likely will result in further improvements. ------------------------- Another simple but effective improvement you can make without removing anything is to check the throttle for full open at wide open throttle. Take a concrete block and short length of 2x4 to press the gas pedal to the floor, then check the throttle body and adjust as necessary to get it fully open. Then be sure it also closes fully when you release. I my case the wide open needed adjustement, but there was ample cable slack to allow fully closed. |

Re: I just cleaned my throttle body 10 minutes ago
I have a Hayes manual I read through the TPS part, I know where to find it and everything but I'll need more details on how to do the ajustments.
Anyway the rattling sound is definitely louder than it was before, I'll have to do something about this soon. |

Take the entire intake off & clean it next time. Use seafoam in both the intake, and the oil to flush it out.
Soilent Green, water pump, or idler pulley.
