Gear Oil Discussion

Being the new owner of a 95 Tracker, I will be going right thru it. Likely starting with the transmission, since it is hard, well firm to shift. My new toy didn't come with an owner's manual and I have yet to find a repair manual for it.

Realizing the transfer case, rear & front axle also need gear oil, I thought I'd ask before I buy the wrong stuff. Do all of them use the same weight gear oil? I seem to recall SyncroMesh is recommended in the Geo Metro's transmission - is that also the case with the Tracker's? Would it be ok to also use SyncroMesh in the transfer case, front & rear axle? Or should I go to the dealer to get the GM recommended oil?

I hope to get to it by this Sat. so any thoughts are certainly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gumby_CT

I use Mobile one gear oil Im all about synthetic.. However for your transmission don't use synthetic (synthetic is too slippery for most trannies). I forget what I had to use off the top of my head but it wasn't synchromesh but then again I have a '91 maybe someone else with your year can chime in.

Re: Gear Oil Discussion

This is the link from the Metro forum I was referring to
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...ghlight=syncro
specifically the last post
75W90 is required, not Synchromesh. But what API Grade???
where he talks about viscosity, GL4 & possibly GL5 corroding synchros.
An earlier poster felt he ruined his transmission using the wrong gear oil.
I always thought gear oil was gear oil. As with ANY 4wd there is not just the tranny to consider
but the transfer case, front & rear axle too.
If they don't ALL take the same gear oil the problem is compounded.

Any thoughts or experience in the area would certainly be appreciated.
Thanks,
Gumby_CT
