Coolant smell and light smoke
My radiator took a crap a month or so ago, now I've noticed a new problem. I was driving with my heat on (it's cold up here in CNY), and noticed the smell of coolant. As soon as I turned off the heat, the smell went away. I also parked my car in a parking lot (waiting for my bro to get out of school) and noticed light smoke coming from the top and bottom of my hood (near the windshield and near the bumper). It was raining today so at first I thought it was just the wind blowing the rain into a mist, but after a while I had second thoughts. I popped the hood and didn't see any coolant leaks or anything. Both hoses were warm, and I also replaced the thermostat when the radiator blew (literally).
Is this something I should be worried about, or should I just drive it until it gets worse? I'm more worried about the coolant smell. Edit - Checked inside under the dash/behind the center console, and didn't feel any coolant from a leaky heater core or anything. Last edited by CivicSpoon; 03-09-2006 at 04:27 PM. |

Re: Coolant smell and light smoke
check your hoses from the block all the way to the heater core. you might want to just take the heater core out bc it sounds like thats your problem.

Re: Coolant smell and light smoke
That's what I was afraid of, sounds like a Sunday project. I'll see if anything is different and then have my friend look at it before I start taking things apart.

Re: Coolant smell and light smoke
Well after driving it for a few days... I'm a dumbass. I'm pretty sure it was just my jacket I was wearing. The day after I first noticed the smell I wore a different coat and didn't smell a damn thing. Yesterday I wore my other coat and smelled it again; when the air coming in the window blew the smell in my face (too warm for heat). I know I've spilled coolant, oil, tranny fluid, gas, and many other chemicals on it before. At least I only have to get the coat dry cleaned and I don't have to try and fix my car

Re: Coolant smell and light smoke
just shows it not always the car, sometimes its the driver that is the problem.lol cleaning a jacket is definetly easier then pulling the heatercore. good investigation.
