chewing sound from driver's side when steering to left ONLY.
Hello to everyone.
My steering pump is of bc of A/C is down, so when I turn a wheel in a morning its kinda chewing rubber and some undescribable sounds along with it. I checked under - nothing is visibly worn-out or in scratches. After while/driving noise getting of almost completely. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Neon Highline '95 Sincerely, Andrew ![]()

Have someone turn the wheel to the left, while you try to see where the noise is coming from. Is it the tire rubbing?

Sounds like the half shaft is shot on the right side

Re: chewing sound from driver's side when steering to left ONLY.
On front wheel drive cars you have a drive shaft that puts power to the wheels. When the constant velocity join inside the black boot goes bad it makes a grinding clicking sound. Check the boots for any tears as they probably leaked all the grease out. It is cheaper and easier to just replace the whole assembly then the cv joint itself. It is a fairly easy job.

Re: chewing sound from driver's side when steering to left ONLY.
Thanks for the input.
Although I was looking under and on these 2 boots, one near the wheel one on the axel. Do not see any tear-offs, leakege, drippings, all in their manufactured shapes, nice and dusty. And why would it almost desappear after 3-4 turns? There something may be in trani but I have no intention to split it apart. Another thing: When I lifted the car and let it running and turning - no noise at all. ![]() Thank you all, Andrew |

Re: chewing sound from driver's side when steering to left ONLY.
probably not your cv joint. if it was you should hear it anytime you turn and it wouldn't go away. it would also be more of a constant knocking sound that would vary with your speed. have you checked all your rotating parts. (hub, bearing, rotor, etc.)
