4.6 With True Duals
HAS ANYONE PUT TRUE DUALS ON THE 4.6 T BIRD? i just cut the muffs off mine and put some chrome tubes in place and it sounds pretty good, but not loud enough
, was thinkin of either cuttin the cats off also or just runnin true duals with no cats, and maybe some flowmasters, these t birds should sound similiar to a stang rite, if it had true duals? also would true duals be capable of goin all the way back or would they have to come out under the doors or something?

Re: 4.6 With True Duals
I had them on my 5.0
Not sure where the cats are on yours, but on mine they were pretty hard to get off. An X pipe would be the best *not one you made yourself, one that a factory made*, it would sound better, and give you more hp and torque. That would be the best option. And yes, it is the same engine as the Mustang, so in theory it should sound the same.

Re: 4.6 With True Duals
well it might not apply to u but i have a 3.8 supercharged and i cut off mufflers as well and noticed some increase in sound, but it wasn't ennoff so i decide to cut off my resiators and that is what made the difference, but mine is a six cyl, so its just sounds really smooth, with a slight purr to it

IMHO, "true dual exhaust" is over-kill on any non-highly modified engine. You will never get a MN-12 to sound similar to a Mustang due to different exhaust routing & length. Yes, "true dual exhaust" is capable of going all the way back to the back bumper. I don't know what kind of emission laws Delaware has so, be sure to check before you consider removing your catalytic converters. I will suggest leaving your catalytic converters or replacing them with some new hi-flow converters & removing everthing else. Use one mid-mounted, dual in/single out muffler & splitting the single pipe into two before the differential. ![]() |

Re: 4.6 With True Duals
well the car is good on inspection for 2 yrs so im not worried about that, ive tried those high flow cats before and i didnt notive much diff over the stock ones , i just want sound , not concerned with what extra power it brings, just sound, i was goin to cut the pipes under neath right were the duals go into 1 and and just throw a elbow on each side and direct them out like right behind the doors, keep the cats on for now just cause they look to be a pain to get to becasue they are on a angle, as far as overkill, IMO i would think the better you can flow the more power, now yeah if you have a 4cyl that is only 1 pipe from the motor then i dont see the point but in a v-8 true duals would be the best for performance, if you can do it, and can do it, i dunno this is kinda a beater car for me so i think ill play with it a little and see what happens, if i can get it to sound like a beast then ill be happy

Re: 4.6 With True Duals
The way JR has his routed is about the closest thing to "true" duals you can do on this car. The only thing though is the way he has his ran it is NOT a true dual. A true dual onle comes together in an H or X pipe at one point. as far as the running out the sides I would say dont do it cause you cant get the pipe up under the car. It would just be hanging there exposed for damage. I really dont know how you would route a "true" dual exhaust on these cars. I have a 3" single exhaust on my car coming from the 3rd cat its all custom made and it was VERY hard to get that size pipe by the rear diff. YOu wont really gain anything on sound by going with a dual. If you did what JR did the only advantage you would get is the look cause its like the saying "a chain is as strong as its weakest link" well an exhaust system can only flow as much as the smallest part of the system.
If you want it to sound REALLY good you'd have to re-do the whole system from the exhaust manifolds back. Since there are 3 cats on there cars they REALLY muffel the sound A LOT even without the resonator. |

Here is a pic of a "true dual exhaust" on a Cougar with a DOHC 4.6 & headers but it's the same routing. The muffler has an internal X-pipe. I'm not sure what size the pipes are. ![]() |

Re: 4.6 With True Duals
Yeah there you go thats a true dual it never goes into one pipe. I cant imagine those pipes being more than 2 1/4" or so. but thats ok cause you wont be making enough horsepower for that to REALLY matter. but if you do get a cutom made one try to get one that might look a little better than this one. You can see all the dents in the side of the pipe from the bender down by the fuel tank. But it is still a nice setup and will more than surfice for your application. If you can afford it

Re: 4.6 With True Duals
if you just want stupidly loud sound and dont care how it runs, just run open headers.
Loud as all hell, believe me.
