Wheel Bearing Replacement

Trac Off and ABS light come on only during hard right corners at slow speeds. I think it's a wheel bearing. Which one? Are the bolts on the rear of the bearing tough to remove? How much dissassembly is required?

You need to get it scanned with an ABS scanner capable of detecting GM CHASSIS/ABS codes.

The hub/bearing can be done DIY in a few hours or less.

If it was your wheel bearing,you should hear a humming noise if you turn slightly too the right or left while going down the road doin 20-25 miles an hr or so..You might have rust-dirt on the abs ring.thats the part built onto the inside of hub assembly(bearing)....

Which scanner do you use or recommend? I have the software by Alex Peper but don't recall anything about ABS on it.

The scanners that have proper capability are expensive such as GM Tech II or Snap On Snappy. I have Autotap software with GM extended codes but the translation doesn't come out right on most ABS codes. A lot of sanners can generate generic ABS codes but may send you on a wild goose chase. The DTC error codes do not match the actual component that may be malfunctioning. Even the DTC error code description doesn't match. The GM Grand Prix service manual has the specific CHASSIS/ABS codes and they read like so: C12XX, etc. and up. Unless a scanner can detect and pick up that range of codes it will probably be worthless.

I have a freind with a Snap-on scanner which can actually display wheel speed readings from each individual wheel (pretty sweet). Most DIY scan tools are not ABS capable. The ones that are cost $700+.

Rich, I use that Snappy mtg2500 all the time between the troubleshooter function and the ability to read individual speed sensor inputs, fixed lots of problems with these functions.

Yep, I'm looking for a used one myself (keeping an eye on e-bay). The flexibility and upgrades they offer are what have me wanting one. Luckily, I can borrow my buddies whenever i want.

If I had a $700 scanner, it would be worth more than my car. By the way, I'm going to put those bearings on tonight that I've had for the last two weeks. I've let fun get in the way of doing that job.

BTW - Personally I'd take a GM Tech II any day over the others. IMO, lots of GM dealerships will probably be going belly up all over the country so I'm keeping an eye out on EBay. Lots of money to be made on the side.

Actually I've found several 97-00 GTs around $4000 and 100,000 miles. I think people still think a car is worn out at 100K. This car has been relatively trouble free for me. I'm amazed at the problems others are having with theirs. I've taken very good care of it and done regular maintainence. Hope these bearings get rid of that loud howling noise and I can get a couple hundred thousand more out of this old steed.

i have a 2001 gp gt and just had the same thing happen to mine. it ended up being the wheel sensor. which means your whole hub assembly needs replaced. found out the hard way that there is two versions of hub assemblies also. one has a steel sensor wire clip and mine had the plastic clip.
