2005 Elantra Engine Light Question

I am about to reach 12,000 miles on my Elantra. The engine light came on for some unknown reason and it is staying on. The temperature is the same as always and there was no sign of the oil light. I know on other vehicles, the warning light comes on at intervals (oil changes, recomended service milage, etc). Would you happen to know if this is the case in my situation? It turned on at 11,975 - 25 miles to 12,000 coincidentally. Thank you for any help.

Re: 2005 Elantra Engine Light Question

The check engilne light stores a code in your ECU (engine computer) that can be read with a specific code scanner. Go to Advance or Auto Zone and see if they can read your code with their scanner (it is free).

Re: 2005 Elantra Engine Light Question

Or you could just not waste your time going to Autozone and just take it to the dealer since you are under warranty until 60k miles. Hyundai's do not have service lights to remind you when you are due for any maintenance. Check your gas cap and make sure it's tight. It's the most common reason for the light to come on. If you gas cap is loose, tighten it up and drive it. Should go off in a few days. If your gas cap is tight, then there is something wrong and the dealer will have to take a look at it.
