Smoke from oil cap???

Hi guys, i've started my gsx yesterday for the first time from a major engine rebuild. But I noticed that a mass of smoke is coming from my oil catch can (connected from both nipples from valve cover). Then my cousin came over (original owner) and said that that was not normal. So we opened the oil cap and smoke came out constantly including some oil being squirted out. He said that maybe one of my exhaust valve is not seated right, but we don't know for sure yet. If any of you dsmers encountered this problem or think what can be the problem, please help me out a little. Any reply would be appreciated. thanks

(also, would the pcv connection have anything to do with this?)

This would belong in the Problem Diagnosis sub-forum.

Are you sure you put everything back together right? I'll have to think about this.

The cap might not be sealing correctly

Re: Smoke from oil cap???

Sounds like you have a good setup going. Only thing I can think of is excessive blow-by.

Re: Smoke from oil cap???

Yeah, my brother and i did put this together, except the porting the head and manifold, installing the valves and retainers with springs, and overboring. but other than that, i guess we did do it all. It took us four years including work and school, but yeah we finally finished (due to revenge on twelve second supra and el camino). This may be a really idiotic question from me, but what exactly is blow by if you don't mind me asking. My brain is fried like i've been doin drugs or something, i just can't really think rite now.

Thank you guys very much for the reply though, really appreciate it!!!

Re: Smoke from oil cap???

blowby is combustion gases passing by the rings into the crank case

Beat me to it, damn.

Did you check the piston to wall clearance, and the taper on the cylinders? End gap on the rings? Did you install the rings right side up, and in the proper grooves.... etc.etc. I am not trying to insult you here, just trying to get an idea why you would have poor ring seal in a freshly machined block.

Re: Smoke from oil cap???

Try doing a compression test to see if you can narrow it down to one cylinder. Unfortunetely it sounds like you need to tear that bitch apart again.
EDIT: Did you put new valve stem seals in?

Re: Smoke from oil cap???

Aww SNAPS!!! I forgot to buy new valve stem for this mother load . Do you guys think i need it because its something that should have been done to begin with. Also, don't worry i take no replies from you guys as an insult. Any reply is appreciated. The only thing that i can think of about the rings is that the JEs is a birthday gift from brothers to brother from ebay. It then made me think if the rings are legit, hell, if the whole piston is legit. All the other internals are straight from websites (dsmparts, turbogarage, forced performace, etc...). The next thing is, if the gaps on the rings are alined, My brother did the piston install when i was at work and he made sure the gaps are separated, but due to the ring clamps (the ones from autozone that rotates as you tighten the clamp) might have rotated them to line each other, if not close to each other. Yeah, a compression check is not a bad idea, I'll do that tonight after i'm done swapping springs, shocks and pads for my neighbor.

Yeah you guys might be right, we might have to tear the son of a gun apart again (i like using this symbol cause its exactly what i'm doing).
Thanks again for the response guy. Gladly appreciate it!

Re: Smoke from oil cap???

the valve stem seals probably could do it to. It would let exhaust gases into the valve cover area and also oil could get down into the combustion chamber

Re: Smoke from oil cap???

Yeah guys, finally did a compression check. The number four runner is at 140 while the other three is at 170. Guess I'll have to tear the SOB apart again, I think I'm gonna take the head to get it pressure checked just incase one of the valves is not sitting right or maybe the valve guides are old. Then, we're gonna have to take out the piston too to see if the rings are aligned if not fried. While I'm at it, I just ordered the external oil cooler kit from machv then I also have an Earl oil cooler core coming in too so might as well slap those on too. Damn, it sucks to find out that I got this problem too. Because as i posted on the other forum, my gears will not go in!!! Its been pissin me off for the longest time. If you guys wanna hear about this problem too then reply back on the other page. I posted it for quite some time now. If you guys can't find it, i'll be more than happy to post another page telling the most recent approach we did.
