2002 TB license plate lights

Hello,

I have a 2002 TB with 50K miles. I have a problem with my license plate lights. I noticed one was out so I went to replace it with a new bulb, when I touched it, it came back on. Since then if they go out I just tap on the tailgate just above the license plate and they come back on. Sometimes one is on and not the other (it is not both on or both off) Is there a harness somewhere that may be loose? If so where? How do I access it? I have replaced the bulbs and the problem occurs with new and old bulbs. Mostly occurs after hitting a hard bump but always when I open and close the rear hatch. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Brad

Re: 2002 TB license plate lights

Brad, if they are the push-in, spade type lamps, you could try to bend out the contacts on the lamps so they make better contact in the lamp holders. Anything on the back hatch takes a beating. Road dirt/salt gets back-drafted in every nook & cranny, plus the shock of the hatch slamming shut. I've got the same exact thing happening on my 2001 ford van. I just live with it as atleast one will stay lit . I suppose you could cut and splice new lamp holders in, but I'd only do that if it was absolutely necessary.
