Slipping clutch on a 98 Z24?
My brother has been looking at a 98 5 speed Z24. It seems to run good, body is in nice shape, but there seems to be something wrong in the clutch. We took it for a drive up the road and all seemed well, tranny was shifting fine but then he took it for a ride out on the highway and I followed behind him. He told me that in 4th and 5th gear, under moderate to heavy throttle the clutch would slip heavily and the rpms would shoot up. I was behind him, and I could smell it burning. According to the Z24's current owner, the clutch was replaced a little over a year ago, and since then the car has sat in his garage, then a few months ago was driven to a repair shop where it has sat for close to 3 months. The current owner didn't say what was replaced in the clutch however. Any idea what could be causing the clutch to slip so badly that you can smell it burning?

He could be full of shit, or didn't put the clutch in right. Seen a ton of cars were people manage to put the clutch pad on backwords. You'd be surprised

Re: Slipping clutch on a 98 Z24?
Let me know how this turns out. My 96 sat for three months after we bought a new ride. I just reinsured the thing & put a plate on it three days ago to use for the winter because my Crown Vic PI has a monster appetite for dinosaur juice. Anyway, I checked all fluids & got the thing ready for the road. When I go to work the first night, the clutch is doing exactly what you described (worse when hot). My initial reaction is the clutch is toast (duh!), but is was FINE when we parked it. Someone told me fluid might have weeped out of the seal contaminating the plate where it had been sitting for a while. If so, it hasn't burnt off after 50 Km. & I didn't see any excess weepage from the bottom of the cases. We are the sole owners of this vehicle & it is the original clutch (162,000 Km). As these are hydraulic can they be adjusted?

Re: Slipping clutch on a 98 Z24?
I have a 96 z-22. had somethinkg called a leaking slave cyclinder? I am told it was inside the transmission. Small amount of tranny fluid on the driveway. Anyway that was at 275,000km the transmisson shop told me it would be better off to replace the clutch at the same time as the transmission had to come apart to replace Slave Cylinder. I had clutch replaced and repaired (or replaced) slave cylinder. The car now has 300,000km on it and runs good. I find the clutch slips a very little bit under heavey accelration in 4th or 5th but only under heavey aceleration. I was told that the clutch may have oil seeped into it. I have heard of this many times about oil on clutches or as they say CONTAMINATED. there is not much you can do from what I understand unless you take apart tranmission again.
