Transmission help

I just bought a 94 caprice lt1 the guy i bought it from says it might need a new trans but he dosen't know which one is in there one place told me that the police package cars take a special type of trans but another place told me that it takes a 4L60E or maybe a 700R4 so does anyone know if i need the police package trans or will one of the other trans due i think the best advice i have recieved so far is that since the only the overdrive is the only thing not working it might me a sensor is that a possible.

Re: Transmission help

1994 LT1 will have the 4L60E, which is an electronically controlled TH700R4.

Re: Transmission help

The ONLY thing that is probably different in the police 4L60E verses the civilian 4L60E is the shift points. Police package transmissions are supposidely set with higher shift points. Other than that, should be the same.

Re: Transmission help

The trans is a plain old 4L60E. The PCM is flashed with a different program on SOME 9C1 cars (but not all).

The lack of OD and/or TCC lockup could be due to a sensor problem, wiring problem (the connector on the RR/top of the trans) a solenoid failure within the valve body, or failure of some hard parts within the trans. The good news is that most of those can be fixed with the trans in the vehicle, except for the last one. If you do have to have the trans removed and repaired, insist on a replacement reaction sun shell (TCI "Best" unit is only $40) and a new pump bushing. The factory shells have a weak hub and spline.

Excellent advice, not only for the 4L60E but also for all 4L60/TH700R4 transmissions as well.

Re: Transmission help

The only thing special about a police package 4L60E is a stupid bracket stopping you from manually getting into first gear, often left off when the pan is dropped so it may not still be there. I would say your friend who thinks the 9C1 package is so very different from grandpa's Caprice is a bit more SPECIAL than that and not in a good way.
