Polishing HELP!!
Hey guys
how do you guys do nice polishing/finishing jobs??? after the topcoat, i usually sand it down with 2000grit to get rid of orange peel before i put the clear coat on, but i always end up chipping the paint on the edges of stuff!! is this process not good?? Do i want the surface as smooth as possible before i put the clear on? and then polish the clear after? Thx |

You need it polish it more with polishing clothes which grits are from 2400-12000, and after that with polishing liquid.
I buoght my polishing set on Micro Mark.

I heard that you can use toothpast to polish your models.
I didn't try yet but I'll manage to try on my current project. Hey ! I have another question : does it exist scale model magazine for 1/24 cars and especially for race cars maybe ? In french, there is only the Tamiya Magazine ! But in english, I know nothing ! Thanks for you answers |

You can polish it with toothpaste but not so good.
About magazine, there are few. In US there are 2 good magazines: Scale Auto http://www.scaleautomag.com and Model Cars Magazine http://www.modelcarsmag.com, and in UK one which isn't so good as this two but I don't know name of it. They are not race car models mag, but they have articles about it too.

So hrmodeler, where would I get some 2400-12000 grit paper? Do I go to my local hardware store or do I have to get somewhere online? Also were you saying that you should sand it down before you put on the top coat or after?
I have been painting a Skyline GTR R33 (my first) and the body is a little runny and there are a few bubbles. What do you or anyone recommend to use to sand this down before applying another coat? Thanks a bunch Nick

Aside from using a finer grit of sand paper, you may want to slightly sand the edges of the model before you start painting. Paint tends to "run away" from edges resulting in thin coverage. This increases the likely hood of sanding through when polishing. Slightly sanding the edges will help the paint cover the edge better. Hope this helps.
