00 Windstar Tranny issue

Well, last Friday went to a doctors appt. in the morning. On the way home o/d off light starts flashing. Get home shut it off, checked fluid looks good still up to full. Turn it back on light off. Fast forward to the evening Hopped in the van to go get baby formula, with a stop at a Fast food establishment, wich is maybe 2.5 miles. Get to ff place leave van run and run inside, come back out, it won't move. I shut it off put it back in drive and it moved, so I get to the store get the baby formula. Starts acting up on the way home, like it's in neutral. Got home eventually.
Anyhow, I borrowed a friends scanner and I'm getting a P0741 torque converter clutch system stuck off. Now what does this mean? Is the tranny cooked and slipping? Is it an electrical issue? Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Charlie

Re: 00 Windstar Tranny issue

Hard to say, what's the history of the unit? Has the transaxle been serviced in the past? (pan drop & filter change), How many miles on the van? It seems the AX4S/AX4N either suffers some sort of mechanical failure regrdless of level of care, or they fail due to lack of service around ~50Kmiles. If you can acheive all the gears by shifting manually, I'd say it's an electrical issue (range sensor). Can't shift manually, something mechanical inside is broke .

G/luck
