02 Bravada 4wd Smarttrak not working
My wife found out the hard way that the Smarttrak 4wd system is not working on our 02 Bravada. On Tuesday, she spun out and ran off the road in snowy conditions. When she tried to get it unstuck, she noticed that the front wheels were not spinning. I have since tested it on other snowy roads, and the front wheels do not kick in. I have checked the fuses, and wiring around the transfer case, but have not found anything unusual. No idiot lights on the dash have turned on. What should I be looking for? Possibly a problem with the transfer case motor? If so, how do I test it? Any ideas?

Re: 02 Bravada 4wd Smarttrak not working
You might try spinning the rear wheels just a few more times in hopes the trouble light will come on. You can get the computer checked for pending codes at some chain type auto parts stores.
Please excuse this statement, but I'm sure you know some '02 Bravadas were built without AWD. They have no front differential or axle shafts. |

I will try that. It is AWD, it does have a front drive shaft, differential, etc...

Took the 02 Bravada to a local shop today. They scanned it , came up with no codes. They did put it up on a hoist, and ran it at about 20 mph, up off all 4 wheels. The front wheels started spinning, but were weak. They said they could stop the front wheels with their foot pressed on the wheel. They recommended another shop. Any ideas?

Re: 02 Bravada 4wd Smarttrak not working
I think there's an electromagnetic clutch inside the transfer case. If the coils burn out or go to ground, you should get a code of some kind but if the clutches are worn out and slippage occurs, I don't know if you should get a code for that slippage. I know you'll get one for a transmission component slippage.

Took it to the dealership. They said the transfer case control module needs to be replaced. $475. We will see what happens next...

Re: 02 Bravada 4wd Smarttrak not working
Is that the piece they call encoder motor?

I believe the transfer case motor is also referred to as the encoder motor. I ordered the transfer case control module from a dealership online for $173 shipped ( the cheapest I could find). I hope to have it in this weekend. I think it is located behind the dashboard on the left side. Hopefully it goes well. I will keep everyone posted...

Re: 02 Bravada 4wd Smarttrak not working
Control module is behind the kick panel on the passenger side.
Let me know how you make out with it. Usually a bad module with give you a code.

Replaced the module - no luck. Back to the dealer on Wednesday. Maybe the module has to be programmed???
