1997 GTP lower intake manifold gasket
I am debating if I should attemp to replace the lower intake manifold gasket on my sons 1997 GTP. I have seen the info from GTP Dad and the updated version . My concern is that the step by step is for aNON superchager GP Does anyone have instructions for the GTP ? Additionally some idea of how much additional time this adds to the project .

Welcome to AF!!
Changing the LIM gaskets on the SC version is not really that much harder than changing the ones on the Non-SC version, you simply have to remove the supercharger along with the LIM and that is about it. You will need a supercharger gasket along with the LIM kit but they should come together. To remove the supercharger, remove the belt from the front end, disconnect the fuel lines and remove the injectors and fuel rail. Then remove the vacuum lines and of course all the associated gear from the throttle body. Unbolt the supercharger and lift it off. The remainder of the bolts are for the lower intake manifold. Be careful with the plastic elbow on the front of the intake manifold, I suggest you purchase a spare when you buy the gasket kit. Lynn, it would be nice to have a comprehensive and published procedure to remove the supercharger and lower intake on an L67 with pics, if possible. The old posts leave a lot to be desired. There are a lot of steps to follow and done properly when doing a LIM or supercharger job.
Off the top of my head key steps like relieving fuel system pressure, draining coolant before disconnecting upper radiator hose, remembering to install new fuel injector o-rings, taking note of the two supercharger to LIM o-ring seals, using threadlocker on the LIM bolts and/or using new ones then apply threadlocker, key torque values listed below and torque sequence, etc. LIM bolts = 11 ft-lbs Fuel injector rail bolts = 97 in-lbs Supercharger to LIM bolts = 17 ft=lbs BTW - Just a suggestion.

I agree Bob but I don't plan on pulling one in the near future if I can avoid it. Maybe another member has a detailed description with pictures they would like to post. If they do I can make a sticky out of it so that it will benefit everyone. By the way are you Premium Member Numero Uno!!! I haven't seen any others.

I've done the LIM in my GTP but I didn't take pictures. So what I remember is off the top of my head and other procedures like camshaft removal. Here is some material that may be helpful on fuel rails and supercharger: L67 Fuel Rail Removal: You'll need to release the pressure in your fuel lines. First open up your gas cap. Then on your fuel rails there is a black nut cover right in the middle of the line on the front. Unscrew it an you'll find a valve that looks like the ones on your tires. Here is what you need to do, find something small enough to push that pin down to relieve the pressure. HOWEVER have a rag or something over it to protect you from the gas that might mist/spray out. Here is where you can make a decision on 3 things to do. If you have the J-tool to remove the fuel delivery lines from the fuel rail use that to do this. Second choice - if you have a small pick tool you can press in all 4 metal tabs that are in the connector and then pull the line off the rails. This is harder than you think cause the tabs like to spring back. OR lastly you can just leave them on and once you take the fuel rails off the motor - tie them up somewhere so they wont get in the way. If you do option 1 or 2, the tool that you will use pushes the metal tabs in and allows you to pull the deliverly lines out. Don't worry about the little bit of fuel that might come out of the lines. Now remove the top bolt that is on top of the fuel rails. This bolt holds the fuel rails down onto the S/C. Next, unplug the fuel injectors' main connector thats right in front of motor. Its held down on the fuel rail on the left hand side when your looking at it. Now unplug all of your injector wires. These have a metal clip on them, just press the metal clip in and then pull the connector out. There are 4 nuts that hold the fuel rail down to the s/c. They are black 10mm nuts found in pretty much the 4 corners of the fuel rail bracket. Undo these bolts. The fuel rails can now be removed. Be very gentle and pull upward on the front side to get the front set of injectors to come out of the head and then do the same for the back side. You should be able to then remove the fuel rails off the motor. The EGR heat shield (the black curved thing that is between the S/C and the EGR valve) might get in your way. If so just remove it. A nut and a bolt hold that on - they are 10mm as well. Once you have the fuel rails in hand, the injectors will with it. NOTE: There is gas still in the rails, if you tip them it will come out where the deliverly lines used to be. L67 Supercharger Removal: You don't have to take your throttle body off if you don't want to. Its not necessary, unless you just want to change the gasket. If you do - there are just 3 10mm bolts that hold the throttle body to the s/c and it just slides off. Remove all sensors going to the throttle body, no matter if your going to keep it on or not. Also you have to remove the throttle cable as well. The cruise one snaps off. You have to pull the linkage open and then turn the black connector upside down and just push on it to slide it off. As for the throttle cable, give it slack like you did to remove the cruise one, and then you'll see it has a round end on it, slide the cable around and off the groove it sits in and then the round end will slide out of its place. Unbolt the 2 bolts on the back of the throttle body to remove the linkage bracket as well. Next, you need to take the brake booster hose off as well. This is the big hose that goes from the master brake booster to the top of your S/C. The hose has L67 stamped on it as well. You can remove it either at the booster by just another small vacuum hose that goes to the top of the S/C as well. It was right next to the brake booster cable. Just unplug this off the top of the S/C and push it off to the side. There are various bolts that hold the supercharger to the intake manifold. These bolts are 10mm and are mostly found at each foot of the supercharger. There is also one in the snout as well. Once all the bolts are removed - just lift it up a bit to break the gasket seal and then you can lift straight up and take the supercharger off and out of the way. I took note on where all the bolts belong and once I had the S/C off I just lay the bolts back in the corresponding spot that they were removed. Just a helpful hint. When you remove the S/C you will find 2 yellow little o-rings on the right hand side of the lower intake manifold. If they are not there - they are stuck on the S/C too. DO NOT loose these. These are ring gaskets for your coolant flow to the throttle body. Without these coolant will leak - be careful with them and don't lose em.

i have just today joined this forum and this will be my first post response. I am going to do the LIM gasket for my wifes 99 SC GTP. i noticed that there were requests for pics. on this thread so i will do my best to add pics. on how to r&r the SC and to do the lower intake gasket.

Welcome to AF!!
Before attempting to do this job I suggest you purchase a Chilton's manual that will give you illustrated information on how to do this job. It is not hard to do if you have basic tool and mechanical knowledge. The steps are almost the same as the normally aspirated version of the engine you just have to remove the supercharger and the associated parts before removing the intake. One word of caution make sure you have the proper fuel line disconnect tool and keep good track of all fasteners and bolts. Good Luck! |
